Kentucky Artist A--Model Mandolin Model KM-171 in Black Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)My 12 year old violin-playing daughter hasn't put this mandolin down since she received it nearly a month ago!
Seems to be well made with nice details and very good sound. If it holds-up, it's a winner!

Kentucky Artist A-Model Mandolin Model KM-160 in Traditional Sunburst Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I've been playing guitar for a while (mostly Contemporary Christian & Irish) and wanted to cross over onto the Mandolin. After alot of research on the web, this one consistently had the best reviews. The fact that it is one of the few in this price range with a solid (not laminate) carved spruce top and a truss rod counts for alot. They may be hard to find, but if you do, you won't be sorry.

Casio CDP-100 88-Note Weighted Hammer Action Digital Piano Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I purchased a used version of this based off the previous reviews. I definitely agree the weighted keyboard has a nice feel to it (this is coming from someone who's used acoustic pianos in the past) and the keyboard itself is very slim & not too heavy...easy to carry around.
What was really disappointing was the sound...it sounds a little masked, not sharp/crisp. I'm not very picky, I just wanted a full keyboard to practice on, but this was something that bothered me. I actually was able compare it to a Casio WK-200 (which is a cheaper keyboard) & surprisingly the CDP-100 sounded worse than it's cheaper counterpart.
I brushed off someone's previous comment about the sound because I figured it couldn't be that bad. It is that bad, so take this into consideration if you're planning to purchase.

Washburn Vintage Series M118SWK Mandolin Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)Firstly, the finish on this instrument was truly amazing, complete with faux scratch marks and faded stains. The volume was also louder, as this mandolin's depth was deeper than usual. The tone was acceptable, however, it is not as smooth as other mandolins in the 200$ range. It would make an excellent strumming instrument, but for me, a classical musician, the tone is unacceptable. Also, a major problem with my instrument was that a few hours after playing it, I started to notice a lot of fret buzz in the G and D strings, and fret buzz was dangerously apparent within the A and E strings. The action also seemed way too high. I took it to a local repairer, and he claimed that 1) the nut was way too high, 2) the frets were extremely uneven, and 3) the bridge was in the wrong position. Maybe I was just unfortunate to get the odd one, but still, I am starting to doubt the reliability to even the very expensive instruments sold online. Make sure you play the instrument before you buy it.

Oscar Schmidt 21 Chord Autoharp Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I purchased this for my six year-old's birthday because her father and I play guitar and she always wants to be a part of the music practice. She is learning to strum in time and be dedicated to practicing an instrument. We all love playing this. Fabulous quality, take some time to tune. Buy the hard case for it and plenty of picks.

Oscar Schmidt OS21CQTBL Autoharp Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I was looking for an easy string instrument to play and to have my friends play along with my accordion. Overall, it's a good quality Autoharp and Autoharps are really easy to play. However, it didn't have enough volume to be heard along with the accordion. So I returned it and purchased an Oscar Schmidt OS45CE 21 Chord Model Autoharp with Built-in Pickup & 4-band EQ. The fine tuners alone are worth the extra cost. And, of course, the volume is what I needed when some one is playing along. Anyway, the blue harp (OS21CQTBL) is okay if you don't mind tuning with the pegs only and if you're playing solo or with other softer volume instruments.

Oscar Schmidt OS11021 Autoharp Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)It was very affordable - but - it had not been properly stored. The strings were extremely dirty, some were rusted and one was broken. There was no parts list for reordering parts from Oscar Schmidt. Additionally, due to improper storage, the felts were very dry and hard. It needs retuning every day due to the poor string quality. I'm not sure it was worth the savings. I'm having a difficult time finding a technician to refelt the bars.

Stagg 4-String "Fusion" Bass, Black Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I've owned this bass for over 2 years now, and I have to admit I was skeptical of how good it was at first. I got it used at my local music shop as a birthday gift, and wasn't sure what to expect.
However, after actually working on music has made me fall in love with this bass. It has a magnificent coating of black with small specks of silver all over the body, so it isn't some cheesy bright pink bass that your wife found at the neighbor's garage sale last week. It has controls for the pickups, as well as a volume nob. The stock pickups are pretty well built; they have a wonderful tone. 24 frets on a bass seems kinda silly, (cause who hits high notes on a bass?) but because of the size of this particular bass is on the smaller (and MUCH lighter) side, it adds some girth to it.
The only problem with it is the fret buzz you get on the E string and sometime A string. It isn't picked up when plugged into an amp (generally) so it's not even worth worrying about. Just raise the strings a bit!
Honestly, this bass is a wonderful piece. Plays great, lightweight, can take some blows, and is a GREAT value. I HIGHLY recommend this bass.

Washburn M3SWK Florentine Cutaway Mandolin (Natural) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I'm a guitarist but I have played a few mandolins. The Washburn M3SWK has potential but not right out of the box. The two I tried and returned had issues. the first one fretted out on the fourth string at the octave and the second one came with the bridge saddle broken. These were issues I didn't want to deal with after waiting for a week to get the mandolin. If set up properly I think the M3SWK will sound and play reasonably well. but there are plenty of other brands to compare with in this price range. I would suggest buying one from an online music shop that will set the instrument up before shipping it to you.

Bob Dylan Hand-Signed Series--Set of 7 Hohner Marine Band Harmonicas Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)When I cashed in my 401K to buy this set, I thought that Bob Dylan would arrive with this box of seven harmonicas under his arm and perform "Blowin' in the Wind" at my son's wedding. That is why I ponied up for next day shipping. Not only did Bob Dylan not appear, but all you get is seven used harmonicas with writing on them inside a nice box. I repeat, these harmonicas are not new! They have been used! Bob Dylan's spit is in them. I mean, really! I love Bob Dylan, but how un-hygienic! Ick!

Behringer Europower PMP6000 1600-Watt 20-Channel Powered Mixer with Dual Multi-FX Processor and FBQ Feedback Detection System Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I bought the Behringer PMP6000 to use as the main power & mixer for my band... we are a 4 piece band with pro-musicians performing 4 to 5 nights a week. The design of the power section is what drew me to this particular unit... light weight & versitile is a key factor after lugging power amps & a separate mixer around. Everything you need is right there! 12 Channels of XLR inputs are more than what we need (we use 4 vocal microphones, an Acoustic Guitar & Stereo keyboard goes into the 1/4" stereo inputs)with enough power ability to fill a 50'(w)x 100'(l)x 15'(h) hall with pristine sound quality. We are running the unit in stereo into a pair of Peavey PR-5s.
The 2 Effect Channels is definitly another bonus, even though we basically use reverb the ability to trim each channel to your liking is great. Each channel has enough tone control to conform to each microphone; the pre-amp trim control adds richness & depth;and the 7 band Graphic EQ is perfect for achieving an overall sound conforming to the room you are playing in plus, the fact you can add on external EQ or effects units makes it even more attractive.
THIS IS A GOOD UNIT, BUILT WELL & FLEXIBLE!!!

Alesis DM6 Kit Performance Electronic Drumset Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I've had my Alesis DM6 drumset up and running for a couple days and I must say I am pleasantly surprised. Up until now any electronic drumset in the $500 range was nothing more than a toy. Because I know that Alesis knows how to make great electronic drumsets I was hoping that their experience making higher end kits would trickle down to this brand new DM6 line. It did. This drumset is fabulous when you consider the price point and, in fact, has no real competition that I could find.
Pros:
- Everything is included. I've looked at a lot of drumsets and many don't include everything you need like bass drum pedals and more. This has everything you need to play right our of the box, even a pair of drum sticks. OK, a couple things not included you will need and that's a set of headphones and a throne (chair) to sit on.
- Sturdy, well made components. The natural rubber drum heads are quiet but have a very good feel and rebound to them. The rubber cymbals are not as quiet as the drum heads but do what they are supposed to do very nicely. All metal hi-hat and bass pedals. Wide diameter aluminum frame rails and compoents.
- Very realistic sounding drum samples.
- Dual zone snare. You can make the snare sound like a rimshot when you hit the rim. Or program it for a cowbell when you play "Don't Fear the Reaper". Or make it sound like any of the other drum sounds included.
- Ability to interface with your computer via USB. This opens up a world of options including MIDI and recording your performances on your favorite recording software. I don't know of any sub $500 kit of this quality that does that.
- MY FAVORITE THING is I just plug in my iPod into the DM6 module and I can play right along to my favorite songs.
- You can buy an ION Drum Rocker module (I was able to get one on eBay, not sold by Alesis) and use this kit for your Rockband drumset. You'll need 8 new cables too, so while there is extra expense, it's possible
Cons:
- Some kits, including mine, were delivered with firmware that was less than perfect. I, and others I have heard, would sometimes have problems with the snare drum triggering properly. I had to hit it harder than I thought I should to get it to trigger. A quick and easy firmware update totally fixed this problem but I know some people have problems updating thgings like this.
The Botton Line:
- Everything I've said in this review is under the caviat, "...for the price." If you are new to drumming this would be a great first set. But if you are and experienced drummer on a tight budget you will not be disappointed as long as you aren't expecting the DM6 to be a Roland Pro high end drum kit. The bottom line is this is the best $500 (street price) electronic drumset ever made.

Recording King Metal Mandolin Champagne Matte Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)I bought this to be able to hold my own with a friend who brings his 6 string banjo to our Irish sessions. I don't have any problem being heard. Not for every style, but is fun. Some suggest it needs to be played as a slide mando. If you don't have a slide, try a deep well socket from Craftsman or other that fits your finger of choice and have fun. It's what this instrument is about.
