Schertler DYN-M for Mandolin Review

Schertler DYN-M for Mandolin
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've only played one gig with this pickup but I'm very impressed. Mandolin pickups tend to over-accentuate the highs I find, giving a brittle, harsh sound. Not so this pickup - it really does sound very true to the acoustic sound of the instrument.
I went direct from the instrument to the mixer, and I'm not sure that I'd bother with a preamp. The signal is strong enough to not really require a preamp, and the tonal balance is so good that I don't feel the need for any further control.
I had some reservations about the method of affixing the pickup to the instrument top, but it works surprisingly well. On my first attempt I had no problems putting it on, and it seemed quite solidly fixed. Plus, if someone does trip over the cord, it might be just as well if it comes off the instrument. Yes, it's a little fiddly to have to go through fitting business this every time you play in public, but the upside is that:
- You don't need to modify your instrument at all
- You can easily switch the pickup from one instrument to another
All in all, yes expensive but it does exactly what it claims to do.

Radial Tonebone PZ-Pre Acoustic Preamp Review

Radial Tonebone PZ-Pre Acoustic Preamp
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have owned and gigged with the Radial ToneBone Acoustic for two years now and I think it still fills a niche that no other pedal I've found has. It allows the musicians to run two instruments up a single channel to the PA (either pre or post EQ) with independent mixes. In addition, the pedal has a Boost button you can kick in to fairly dramatically up your volume in the mix.
I almost always play with two instruments - I do this because I play in alternate tunings and its quicker on stage to just drop an instrument and pick up a second. Combine this with the Boost button I discuss above and I can now fairly easily manage both my instrument volumes and allow for volume control between the rocking loud stuff and the quieter finger picked stuff. This pedal was in so many ways made for me!
But, the versatility comes with a price. Compare the sound of this Preamp against its Acoustic competitors, mainly the LR Baggs Para Acoustic D.I.or Fishman Aura Spectrum D.I.models and there is a clear difference in sound quality. This has been very disappointing. After two years, I may finally break down and purchase the Fishman DI I've been lusting after and start counting on the sound-guy to take care of my levels.

Breedlove Atlas Solo J350/CM Acoustic Electric Guitar Review

Breedlove Atlas Solo J350/CM Acoustic Electric Guitar
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Some up front disclaimers:
1) I am a hobbyist with guitars and quite the amateur and am no expert by any means.
2) This is the first acoustic (and only the second guitar, the first being a Variax) that I've ordered online.
I recently purchased this guitar from Amazon. I've wanted a Breedlove for some time. The Atlas series is the higher end of the Korean made Breedloves and is designed and has the final setup and QC done in Breedlove's Bend, Oregon facility.
First to address the online ordering experience:
1) Ordering from Amazon was quick and easy, this was the last one in stock and was serviced by Amazon.
2) The guitar came in a Breedlove box packed in a plastic wrapped Deluxe gig bag. There was no apparent
shipping damage, much to my surprise :)
3) After the guitar acclimated for a while I unpacked it. In the gig bag (it's a pretty nice bag) was the
guitar and a small package with an allen wrench for the truss rods (notice the s on the end of rod, more
later), a spare saddle and a couple of shims for the saddle (which I definitely did NOT need).
4) When first unpacked I found the action to be extremely high (unplayable past the 3rd fret high). I adjusted the neck truss rod quite a bit (a full turn clockwise) and that helped some but I didn't want to go any further so I backed it off half a turn and decided to take it to a local dealer and get a setup done. The setup rendered things much better (saddle was shaved down). In hindsight most guitars ordered online will probably require a setup so I won't whine too bad. Just remember that's out of pocket when ordering online.
5) The end pin jack was extremely loose (I could pull it out 1/4 inch). I easily fixed the end pin issue.
That said, once the setup was done and I was happier:
Thoughts on sound:
Much of this is very subjective and about the player and their style. I play mostly with a pick and a
combination of picking and light to medium strumming. I have a light to medium touch and don't dig in much or
play with a heavy or fast style. If you are into heavy strumming though the guitar can lose it when really digging in.
Unplugged this guitar sound pretty good. It is definitely loud and projects well and has plenty of nuance. It
doesn't sound too boomy and is pretty even sounding across the board. The treble is there but not too much so.
The sustain is definitely "there". The harmonics are clear but a bit hard to pin down. The sound of this guitar
is almost bell like, it kinda' sings. All in all the sound is quite nice.
Plugged up through my setup the guitar definitely acquires some bass (a bit much in some situations) but the
L.R. Baggs sounds pretty good overall and is very adjustable.
On the side sound hole: This feature REALLY opens this guitar up to the player. I can hear nuances in the sound
of the guitar that just aren't there with any other guitar I play. While this feature may be subjective I can't
say enough about how it really wraps the player up in the sound of the guitar. The sound is something that
can't be recorded effectively and just has to be heard first hand, if you get a chance you should definitely
try one of the Solo series to see what I mean.
Thoughts on playability:
Though the guitar is relatively unforgiving of sloppy fretting the neck is very playable. The satin finish on
the neck is fast and not sticky in the slightest. The neck is relatively thin and a bit wider than I'm used to
but is really comfortable and easy to play. The guitar is a Jumbo and the body is deep and large so I will need
to adjust a bit but overall balance and playability is nice.
Thoughts on build quality:
The guitar uses the "JLD Bridge Truss" for bracing. This I believe was a system originally designed to repair guitars that had top bowing issues and was designed to transfer some of the string tension from the bridge to the sides. It is basically a truss rod that connects the bridge to the tail block. It seems to work well and helps sustain a lot.
In summary:
All in all for a $750 Breedlove I like this guitar a lot. I wish I could have afforded one of the Pro series
but it was twice as much. The guitar sounds distinctive in a good way, is well balanced and plays well. The
monitor sound hole adds to the richness of the sound. I would encourage anyone looking for a new acoustic in the
$700 and up (and you definitely can go UP with Breedlove!) to give these guitars a close look. I'll be looking at the new American Series Solo for sure!

Fishman Prefix Plus-T Preamp - wide format Review

Fishman Prefix Plus-T Preamp - wide format
Average Reviews:

I had this pre-amp installed into a Tacoma Thunderchief acoustic electric bass. It sounds awesome and works great. My only complaint is that the sound is a little weak on my G and D strings up high on the neck. But I'm a bass player and I don't spend very much time up there. I give this pre-amp an A. I am pretty impressed with this guitar, it sounds kind of muffled when you play it with a pick, compared to other non electric, non cutaway guitars, there is no denying that. BUT I actually love playing it and especially finger picking sounds so good and when plugged in, it sounds fantastic.

Taylor Guitars 655-CE Jumbo 12 String Acoustic Electric Guitar Review

Taylor Guitars 655-CE Jumbo 12 String Acoustic Electric Guitar
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I wasn't even really looking for a new 12 string. My current one is 35 yrs old though it was always only just adequate. I first played a Taylor jumbo-style 12 (355) about 10 yrs ago and was taken aback by the huge quality of the sound so when I picked this one up I suspected that I would be pleased. What I did not expect was to be blown away. Maple guitars are typically bright but the pureness of the tone and the level of sustain of this guitar is unmatched by any I have ever played. A friend and fellow guitar player picked it up over the weekend and, without any prompting, said that this was the best 12 string guitar he had ever played and that I had hit a home run. I have to admit that this helped to assuage my guilt over spending the $3K and that my wife heard the comment also quieted the "why did you need another guitar...?" I played at least a other dozen 12 strings the day I bought this guitar (Martins, Guilds, other Taylors, new, used, etc.) but none could match this one for the tone that I love in a great 12. It also sounds pretty good plugged in (though you won't need to). Choosing a guitar is always a personal matter but you will be missing out on a very special instrument if you don't give this one a try. It will be the last one you'll ever need. ps. My other guitars are Martins and Gibsons so I do not have a Taylor bias.

Breedlove Atlas Stage J350/EF Acoustic Electric Guitar Review

Breedlove Atlas Stage J350/EF Acoustic Electric Guitar
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this Breedlove from Guitar Center in Dallas. I went there to buy a Takamine Jumbo (EG523SC), which I'd been shopping for for a long time. I played the Tak, basically liked it, and then saw this Breedlove jumbo they had on the wall, deeply discounted as it had been a floor model for quite a while. As soon as I touched it I knew I was dealing with something in a different class from the Takamine. The J350 is as bright and loud as the Tak, but without being "boomy," due to its clear but deep bass tone. The neck is a little wider than my old Fender, which takes some getting used to, but I have found that the width, while challenging my grip a bit at first, also gives me more room on the fretboard.
The electronic tuner is excellent (and the guitar holds its tune very well), and the pickup is brilliant. With the blowout price, I got this guitar for $791 (plus tax) with a breedlove hard case. I could not be more pleased with the deal. I have been in there since and played a Taylor worth $2200 and could not say it had a fuller or clearer sound than my J350. You will not be disappointed. If I had more money, I would certainly have paid it for this guitar; as it is I consider myself lucky to have found one in my modest price range!

Dean Tradition S2 Solid Top Dreadnaught Acoustic Guitar, Gloss Natural Review

Dean Tradition S2 Solid Top Dreadnaught Acoustic Guitar, Gloss Natural
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have to preface this review with a comment on Amazon. At first, I was very upset when my guitar arrived, as it was a left-handed model, when I had ordered a right hand version. Amazon was great, sending out my replacement righty guitar NEXT DAY FedEx! I had barely sent back the left hand model when the righty arrived at my door step. Fantastic customer service from Amazon!Product: Dean Tradition S2, Gloss Natural
Price Paid: $110 (usually sells here for $225)
Sound: Sounds great! I was expecting a slight step up from other entry level guitars, but this sounds way better than I had figured it would. Very full deep sound from the solid spruce top.
Action/Playability: Very easy to play. It has taken me a few soungs to get used to the scale, as I had been using my daughters Jr. sized guitar, but once that was done, I have had no problems. The neck is straight and true, and the action is good.
Craftsmanship/Reliability: Very beautiful guitar. The tortoise binding gives this guitar an extra bit of class, and the wood is beautiful. As to reliability - I've only had it a short time, but it seems very solid.
Overall Rating: Five stars. I was hoping to get a nicer guitar than is typically available in my budget (I was planning to spend ~$125), and the sale on this Dean was just what I was looking for. Most in the lower price range are typically poorly made, or don't sound that good. Now, I can't say for sure that I would have bought this particular model if my budget had been $225, so maybe my review is a bit biased by the sale price I paid. Either way, I'm a very satisfied Amazon and Dean customer!

Taylor Guitars GC4 Grand Concert Acoustic Guitar Review

Taylor Guitars GC4 Grand Concert Acoustic Guitar
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just got mine a couple of days ago from Amazon. Sounds just like I expected - full and lively without being brash. Lots of treble zing and smooth responsive bass and midrange. Some of the great sound is the ovankol wood coupled with the great taylor shape and very straight neck. The taylor workmanship is evident everywhere, even the small details. One of, if not, the best american made guitars today. I only expect it to sound better as it ages.

There's a bit of treble but its great for the money. It's a great sounding guitar and
sounds phenomenal plugged or unplugged.Obviously it's not going to sound like a Taylor or Martin
but for someone with a budget this is perfect. Tuner is great and deffinitely handy.

Dean Exotica Acoustic-Electric Guitar, All Solid Wood Review

Dean Exotica Acoustic-Electric Guitar, All Solid Wood
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you wanted that $6000 Taylor, but only have $600 to spend, do yourself a favor and get this guitar. Then get Red brand Copper Bronze strings (Light) and some African Wenge wooden picks (from Fidis Picks, google them). Play for a couple of hours to warm up the strings, and you may be blown away. I was.
Before this, (which is my first guitar) the only guitar I was impressed by the sound of was a $5000+ Taylor that belongs to a friend of mine, which just has this amazing presence, richness, volume, clarity and sweetness all the way across the room--and a gorgeous abalone rim around the edge to add to the beauty.
This guitar has all that. Now my own guitar is my favorite one I ever heard. I use abalone picks too (from Brossard Picks), for a liquidy, mystical, other amazing kind of sound. Get this guitar and BE HAPPY! :)

Taylor Guitars 200 Series 214-G Grand Auditorium Acoustic-Electric Guitar - Natural Review

Taylor Guitars 200 Series 214-G Grand Auditorium Acoustic-Electric Guitar - Natural
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The craftmenship on the 214g is superb, thats what you have to expect for Taylor guitars. Nice light-round body, easy to handle, and plays wonderful. The gloss finsish in the front of the guiatr makes it seem
fun and social, while the dark wood on the back and sides allows it to become more proper, and respectful. The 214g is a fragile one, so I wouldn't, or be cautious, make this a travlers guiatr. I found myself esaily sliding from fret to fret, and holding the strings in place was effortless. For fingerpicking the 214g lives up to its name, but when strumming hard, and rapidly (with a pick) the sound seems to fall apart or lose its place. The sound the 214g makes is distinctive, a deep-low, but vibrant vibe is how I would describe it. If your looking for a quality guiatr, but not to bad on the wallet, then the Taylor 214g is great fit. Looks beautiful, plays like an acoustic should, and is defintily competitive to the other more expensive brands. Overall for the price range, you can expect this to be a great guiatar.

Cort Earth 100DX Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar, High Gloss Natural Review

Cort Earth 100DX Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar, High Gloss Natural
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently bought this guitar used. I was skeptical at first because I had never heard of cort. After doing some research, I was surprised to find out that many big name companies such as fender sub-contract out to cort. So basically, many big name guitars lower end products are cort guitars with a different brand logo on it. After finding this out, I decided to purchase the guitar. I am very happy with my purchase. The action is low, without the annoying buzzing that many cheaper guitars have. The guitar has a very nice tone and balance. It's obviously not a taylor or martin, but I recommend this to anyone interested in a good guitar without breaking the bank. Just buy a good set of strings and you're good to go.
