Luna Henna Oasis Nylon String Acoustic/Electric Guitar Review

Luna Henna Oasis Nylon String Acoustic/Electric Guitar

I fell in love with a guitar over the internet, and rightfully so. When I received the Luna, faster than I ever would have thought possible, it was every bit as wonderful as I imagined. It had a great action, great sound, a bit heavier than I expected but definitely a worthy guitar for my classroom. Unfortunately it did not have the Orion 4 band preamp ( "Preamp: Orion 4-Band EQ w/ Digital Tuner" - still posted on the website as of the date I am writing this, October 29, 2009) that was advertised. I called up customer service and a very nice representative offered to send a return slip, but while I was waiting online, I visited the site and noticed that the Luna Guitars were no longer shipping with the Orion, they were now shipping with the T35 B-Band which is advertised on the website as an Orion, ("* HEN OAS NYL Laser etched Henna - * Body: Folk - * Top: Solid Cedar - * Back/Sides: Maple - * Neck: Mahogany - * Fretboard: rosewood - * Preamp/Tuner: Orion - * Scale: 25 1/2" - * Nut: 1 5/8" - * Finish: Satin - * 39 1/2" x 14 7/8" x 4 3/8" - * 5.4 lb. - * Case Option: LL2") but Derek Badala, the Division Manager at Luna Guitars said it was made by another manufacturer and was actually superior to the Orion even though it had only three bands of Equalization and no balanced out! So I asked her to have her people look into it and get back to me when they determined exactly what could be done and she eventually agreed to contact me by E-mail the following week.
Instead of contacting me, Amazon sent out another guitar with a bill of sale that read $0.00, which I suspected was too good to be true. This guitar was the same model and had the Orion four band, but the neck was not finished nearly as well and had a pronounced "Buzz" between the second and fifth frets. Both guitars were also missing the end button as well. Since Amazon hadn't contacted me, I made three attempts to contact them and finally got through on the second day. Both guitars are going back as defective, and I am regretfully giving up on my attempts to purchase this guitar. If this is Amazon's idea of customer service, they will definitely have more to worry about than losing me as a customer. I have saved all of the correspondence, as well as copies of the web pages, just in case anyone thinks I am making this up or twisting the facts in some way. [...]
Addendum: Just to clear up some misunderstandings, I was not complaining about Luna's customer service, just Amazon's. Luna's people have been very helpful. I was also apparently not offered a second guitar for free. They did not notify me that they were sending it, send me a way to return the first guitar, or contact me first as agreed, but the customer service representative that I contacted never offered that as an option. My initial complaint was that they did not send the guitar with the specifications as advertised. When they sent the second guitar without my knowledge or consent (our agreement was that they would contact me with more information as to what my options would be after they contacted the manufacturer) I offered them a donation letter on School letterhead to defray any cost they may have incurred by sending the additional guitar. If there were two guitars involved, I would certainly not have returned either of them. I also notified Amazon that we had a qualified Luthier on staff, who would agree to do the repairs if I got permission and it did not affect the warranty. I also have to say that Amazon does deserve credit for posting this as I typed it, unedited and without editorial comment, but it was their decision entirely to demand that I return both of the guitars as defective and I was not offered any other option.
I still hope to put a Luna guitar in my classroom. I want one with the specifications advertised, and I want it to be the best guitar that my students can possibly get. If I had received this product from a free standing store, I would have accused them of "Bait and Switch!" When I received an additional instrument with an invoice of $0.00, my reaction is the same as the other reviewer, that someone has sent me a free guitar. Taking back both of the guitars as defective left me feeling betrayed and bewildered and since they have offered me this forum to express my disbelief and utter dis-satisfaction, I have chosen to do so.
I am certainly not trying to discourage any one from owning a Luna Guitar. It should not need a neck job right after it comes out of the box, and it should not be missing parts, even minor ones, but I was very impressed with the first guitar I received and if it had been offered with the B-Band in the first place, I would be posting a five star rating, end of story. I hope this clears everything up but if it doesn't, let me know and I will be happy to elucidate further.

Daisy Rock Pixie Acoustic Guitar Starter Pack, Powder Pink Review

Daisy Rock Pixie Acoustic Guitar Starter Pack, Powder Pink
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Late winter 2006 I heard Bob Edwards interviewing Patty Larkin re: her La Guitara project. One of Patty's goals is to get more little girls playing guitar. I heard that and immediately thought of my cousin's 9 yo daughter Meganne. I sent Meganne the La Guitara CD & asked her if she'd like to learn to make that kind of music. Meganne is now the proud owner of a powder pink Pixie acoustic. The reduced girth of the neck is perfect for a girl's hand. Daisy Rock offers the Pixie alone or as part of a starter pack; I chose the latter option. My whole family is quite pleased with Daisy Rock Girl Guitars.

Luna Muse 12 String Cutaway Acoustic Guitar, Maple Review

Luna Muse 12 String Cutaway Acoustic Guitar, Maple
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my third or forth 12 string and I am very impressed (the others were Yamaha and Ibenez). The solid top and maple back and sides create a sweet tone and when plugged in it rocked my world. I'm not going to suggest that it will beat a Taylor or Gibson or any other high end guitar but when you consider it is about one fifth to one tenth of the price, well...nuf said. Still it has great tone and the action makes you think you're playing a six string. The neck is a little narrower than a standard 12 string, but it's not a problem for me and I have big fat ogre fingers. You get so much more than your moneys worth. I'm thinking about selling my Ovation Legend so I can make room for the six string Luna Muse.

Luna OracleAcoustic/Electric Guitar, Dolphin Review

Luna OracleAcoustic/Electric Guitar, Dolphin
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this guitar for myself after seeing it on Gold Box for significantly less than MSRP. Before purchasing, I checked out Luna's website and listened to several sound clips and watched videos of some professional musicians playing Luna guitars. I currently own a Taylor 410, and a couple of low-end Yamaha acoustic guitars. I consider myself somewhere between an intermediate to advanced guitar player. I've been looking for an acoustic-electric cutaway, at a reasonable price, for several months. I thought I couldn't go wrong with this Luna at the Gold Box price.
When the "first" guitar arrived, the box had obvious shipping damage (bent in half at the neck area). Upon opening the box, I discovered the top half of the neck snapped completely off, dangling by its strings. These guitars are simply wrapped once around with a VERY thin layer of foam wrap (about 1 mm thick), and stuffed in a cheap, lightweight cardboard box. I couldn't believe a guitar manufacturer would package a guitar with so little padding and protection, and worse yet, that Amazon would ship the guitar in the same flimsy box from Luna (without putting it in another box).
The return process was simple and painless: I provided Amazon with a brief explanation of why I wanted to return the guitar, and this triggered an automatic shipment of a replacement guitar. I printed a pre-paid UPS shipping label, and dropped the package off at a local UPS store.
The "second" guitar arrived about a week later. Once again, the guitar arrived in the same flimsy box, this time with a fairly large hole torn in the outside. I was pleasantly surprised to find no obvious damage to the guitar, however, the neck had a large finish crack on the back near the body of the guitar. This was not shipping damage, but a gross manufacturing defect. At least with this guitar I was able to play it and give it the once-over. The strings were mediocre, and the action was a bit high. Tone quality was marginal. The built-in electronic tuner worked well and the electronics appeared to be decent, although I never had a chance to plug in to an amplifier. The return process was then repeated.
The "third" guitar arrived, again, about a week after the second was returned. This time, the guitar was packaged in a second, heavier box, which was encouraging, although the inside box was not sealed and had been opened. After taking the guitar out and playing it a bit, I thought the third time was the charm. I thought wrong. This time, the finish at the bottom edge of the body looked like it was delaminated and could peel away. The blemish could very well have been from an impact, which makes me wonder if this guitar had been a customer return. While I had the guitar out, I played it just to get a comparison with the second one. It was very similar in sound and playability, with the action also being a bit high. Due to three strikes with three different guitars, I opted not to get a replacement, but requested a refund instead.
At a glance, these guitars appeared to be fairly well made, but fit and finish quality is far from excellent. I would expect a guitar with an MSRP around $600 to be free from dust specks in the finish, and the edge binding should line up well at the seams, and be blemish-free. None of the three Luna guitars I received met these expectations.
In my opinion, this is a risky purchase if you expect excellent quality, durable packaging, and great sound.

Luna Fauna Acoustic Guitar, Dragonfly Review

This guitar is not only gorgeous to look at, it also plays and sounds as good as it looks. I have had many compliments on both the looks and the sound. It is also very light in weight, so easy on the shoulders and back. After playing for 30-plus years, the weight of my guitar was taking its toll. I read about this brand, designed by a woman-for women-and that is why I decided to try a Luna. The built-in tuner is amazing and easy to use. There is even an automatic bypass on it for tuning during live performances. The EQ/preamp are equally good. Upon arrival, the action seemed a bit high, so I brought it to my local music store to have it adjusted. Apparently, the manufacturer realizes that every player is different and leaves that part up to the buyer.Have it done by a professional-it only takes a few minutes and shouldn't cost very much. All in all, this is a GREAT guitar for short money. I highly recommend it for any player!!

Luna Oracle Acoustic-Electric Guitar, Crane Review

Luna Oracle Acoustic-Electric Guitar, Crane
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this guitar for the purpose of getting back into playing guitar again, but wanted something economical. I initally started looking at Martin's and Taylor's, but the price tag was more than I wanted to spend. I have a young child and didn't want to worry about scratching the guitar, but I wanted a guitar that played well.
I was looking at Amazon gold box specials and noticed the Luna Oracle Acoustic Guitar, Crane. I searched online for reviews and couldn't find many. Than I searched youtube and went to Luna's website. After researching, I decided to purchase the guitar. I am very happy that I made the purchase on Amazon.
Positives:
* Guitar is made very well and has a nice deep sound.
* Built in tuner is accurate and tunes quickly.
* Materials are good quality and easy to maintain.
* Friends and family who play guitar comment on how well it plays.
* You don't have to worry about scratches, etc. for the price.
Negatives:
* Recommend getting the Luna case as it doesn't come with one.

Luna Oracle Zen Acoustic/Electric Guitar Review

Luna Oracle Zen Acoustic/Electric Guitar
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Luna Oracle Zen by Luna guitars is a great example of false advertisement. The description on there website is completely false. The description speaks of Rosewood inlay, its all plastic. The description says solid spruce and maple wood, its all laminate. The overall construction of the guitar was poorly put together. The jointing of the neck to the body was crooked, There was oversanding on the guitar which showed the plywood underneath the laminate. I returned this guitar shortly after I received it. This guitar was inspected by a certified luthier that happens to be a good friend of mine, and he pointed all of the problems. It would have cost just as much as I payed for the guitar to adjust it. I do not recommend buying anything from this company if you are a serious player, I teach guitar for a living, and Luna is by far the worst guitar I have come across. They had the nerve to put an inspection sticker on the guitar after it was built.

Luna Muse Nylon String Acoustic/Electric Guitar Review

Luna Muse Nylon String Acoustic/Electric Guitar
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
UPDATE: see the results of my modifications at the end of this review.
---------------------------------------------
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
The price has gone up almost $100 since I bought mine, which surprises me a little. I will not critique the electronics except for the tuner(which works fine). My set-up is disassembled and it will require some serious space-engineering to set it up, so I'm just working with the unplugged guitar here. I may update the review in a month or two when I can say more about the pickup and EQ. Reviews I've read elsewhere say that the b-band pickup is good, and the plugged-in sound of the guitar is a "pro".
Some background: I've been playing for almost 30 years, always steel-string, some acoustic, some electric. I've owned may guitars, some of them quite good. I've never owned a guitar that didn't benefit from a bit of tweaking or modification. The last couple of years I've grown disaffected, I've hardly played at all. I've recently discovered rumba and flamenco, and I hope that the move to nylon will re-kindle my love of the instrument, as I challenge myself with some right-hand discipline, work with new music, and translate some of my older work to articulate on this type of instrument.
On to the review ...
Pros:
1)Absolutely the most beautiful guitar you will find for the money, even at this new, higher price($399 right now).
2)The built-in tuner works.
3)The frets are in the right places(intonation is accurate).
4)Contrary to reviews I've seen elsewhere, it holds a tune as well as the next nylon-string guitar.
5)The XLR jack right next to the standard 1/4" is a nice touch, and I will definitely take advantage of what I anticipate will be a quiter and more mechanically secure output once I'm set up for amplification and recording.
6)The unplugged tone, though not great, is not as bad as you might think.
Cons:
I'm not going to number these. Basically, most of the rest of this review will be a detailed criticism of the fundamental design and craftsmanship flaws that render this guitar an inappropriate choice for the serious player.
To begin with, the action is way, way high. I know that nylon generally needs higher action to avoid buzz, but this is absurd. If it were only the bridge saddle, I would rate this guitar 4 stars. As I said earlier, I've owned some good guitars, but I've never had one that couldn't benefit from a little tweaking, and if all I had to do were to file down the bridge saddle then I wouldn't complain(much). Problem is, it's also in the nut. Which is glued. And close inspection under good light reveals that there are some problems at the joint between the nut and the neck, which was filled with putty and stained to look okay.
Okay, so I have to file down into the grooves of the nut. Which will void the warranty, as explicitly stated in the literature that comes with the guitar. It's also a very tedious and error-prone task, and If I go too low, I'll have to crack out the whole nut and replace it, at which time I fully expect to be dismayed at the remains of whatever happened to make them fill around the base of the nut with putty in the first place. I'm going to do it anyway. This alone is a reason not to buy this guitar if you are a serious player.
Now, the height is also in the bridge saddle, and I'm okay with filing down the base of it. I know that if I accidentally go too low, I can shim it back up. I also know that the bridge saddle is easily removable/replaceable, and that tinkering with it will not void the warranty. BUT!!!--- close inspection reveals that the height of the wood which forms the receptacle for the saddle limits how much I can take it down. That is to say: no matter what I do, I can never get the action down to a really good level. The action is that high. If this were a strat with a bolt-on neck then I would shim the neck on the body side of the bolts. But it's not, and the neck is arrow-straight, so I can't get anything out with the truss rod.Still, by working at the nut and bridge saddle, I think I can cut the string height almost in half, and then it will at least be reasonable, though far from ideal.
Next problem: string spacing and neck width. `Specifically, the neck is wide, bu the strings are close together. I know wider necks are the norm for classical and flamenco guitars, along with *slightly* higher string action, but the reason for the wider neck is so that you can have wider string spacing, so that your fingers don't deaden the strings next to the ones you fret. On this guitar, there is a huge amount of wasted space on the fretboard above and below the strings. In fact, the frets themselves stop short of the edge of the fretboard. There is a light-colored wood trim that runs the length of the neck on either side of the fretboard, and looks almost as if it were added as an afterthought, without adjusting the frets and string spacing to match! Especially given the high strings, this guitar could definitely use an extra millimeter between the strings for playability. But no, I have the disadvantage of not being able to wrap my thumb around the top for the lazy G, without the advantage of extra space to help prevent inadvertent muting of adjacent string with my fretting fingers.
Now the last obvious major problem: The part of the fretboard that overlaps the neck, terminating at the sound-hole. There are actually two problems here. First, this is where you notice that the frets are terminated at a rather steep angle. This is nailbait. Trying to learn the flamenco triplet strum, I split my thumbnail and took off a huge chunk of my middle fingernail. Since there is so much wasted space at the edge of the fretboard, why not make the frets slope off gently, so you don't chip your nails strumming in this area? Similarly, where the neck ends, the points on the semi-circle around the sound-hole are very sharp, they should be rounded to something like a 1/8" radius. I've actually already chipped off bits of the tips of these points on both sides.
I'm a little perplexed by these problems, because the precision involved in crafting the the aesthetic aspects of this guitar, particularly the very nice and intricate crescent-moon-shaped Celtic knot inlay around the sound-hole, would make things like string height and spacing seem trivial by comparison. Go figure.
So I have to: file down into the grooves of the nut, file down the bridge saddle, file the edges of the frets over the body and file off the sharp corners of the end of the fretboard. All just to bring this guitar up to a reasonable state of non-hazardous playability. Warranty trashed. I could return it, but I'm not. I paid $302 for it here on Amazon, and think I basically got approximately my money's worth.
One thing that kind of bothers me, somehow symbolic, is that in the literature that comes with the guitar the woman who designed it is mentioned, "Yvonne de Villers, founder of Luna Guitars, is not a musician, but, neither was Leo Fender." Actually, yes he was. True, he wasn't a guitarist, he played saxophone, but he was, indeed, an amateur musician.
So, in summation, it's very pretty. If you just want a guitar to look good on a stand in your living room, and maybe take it up when you have company to pluck a little "Greensleeves" or "Yesterday" or "Hey Delilah"... well then, this guitar and the right bottle of wine might get you laid. But, if you have any inclination to serious musicianship, then even with a lot of tricky work, this guitar has built-in flaws and limitations and you should look elsewhere. This guitar seems to have been designed as a decoration, not a player's instrument.
I intend to update this review after the filing and after I electrify it. Wish me luck! If I can make it work, I'll be a guy in Charleston, SC, playing Spanish music on a Celtic-designed guitar that was "Hand crafted in China". And it will all have been worthwhile! Plus I really dig the whole lunar aesthetic thing.------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE:
Well, I did all the filing and hacking, and I must say that if the guitar had come to me like this, I would probably give it 5 stars.
I cut 3mm from the bottom of the bridge saddle. Actually, I accidentally too about 3.5mm, but the shimmed it back up. I'm a little worried about the effect of the shims on the tone through the pickup, but I haven't crossed that bridge(heh) yet, and if I find it's bad when I plug in, then I'll just buy a new bridge.
I used a needle file for the low-E notch in the nut, but I didn't have anything narrow enough for the rest of the notches, so I used a hack saw blade. I chose the depth by using feeler gauges and a putty knife to measure the clearance between the frets, added a couple of skinny feeler blades to the stack, and took down the notches until I touched the gauge stack. I took out a *lot* of nut.
I used a file to make the shoulders more shallow on those frets which sit on top of the body. I also rounded the two pointy corners of the fretboard where it terminates at the sound hole. I screwed up and made some minor scratches at the sound hole doing these two things. I don't have any specialized guitar tools, and I did all this on my living room floor.
I also put a Dunlop Herco Transparent Pickguard Set on it, since it was already starting to show some nail scuffs.
I restrung with: D'Addario EJ25B Nylon Classical Guitar Strings, Custom, which have a lot...Read more›

Luna Muse Parlor Bubinga Acoustic Guitar Review

Luna Muse Parlor Bubinga Acoustic Guitar
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I own two of these wonderful solid-wood guitars and I think it's one of the best instruments out there for the costs and quality of materials. The Luna Muse Bubinga is a great small-size professional quality guitar.
It's hard to find a solid-wood (no fillers, no fake woods) guitar that still are hand-made as well. The sound is crisp and clean and surprisingly voices a nice full sound -- i.e. it sounds much bigger than its compact size. It's a great travel guitar and has electronics as well for when you need to plug it in. It makes a perfect starter guitar for young students but I've enjoyed it as well as a 20 year guitar player.
A quick internet search for good travel or starter guitars shows that this is one of the best buys out there and it's almost impossible to find a comparable guitar (low price and solid wood). You won't be disappointed if you get one of these!

My daughter received this guitar for Christmas. It is GORGEOUS! The neck is narrow enough that her small hands can play it easily, and the electric plug-in aspect allows her to grow into it as she evolves as a musician. The Luna line of guitars have a nice sound quality, and seem to be well made. They certainly are beautiful. Have I heard deeper richer sounds from other guitars? Yes. But this one meets all our needs and then some! Highly recommended.

I became a bit "guitar obsessed" awhile back when my daughters and I were taking guitar classes together. I ended up with an electric (Dean hardtail), another aucostic, my daughter's Ibanez, plus this Luna. And even though I don't pick it up as often as I'd like, I still love my Luna! Awesome sound, this guitar is pleasing to both the ear and the eye. Gorgeous artwork! I don't let anyone else play my Luna; it's found a special place in my heart and this is the guitar I pick up over and over. I've never regretted purchasing this guitar.

I'm not making a judement on the sound quality as I've a tin ear, but the description for this guitar should say somewhere that it has a plastic back (the resonance cavity is plastic). The Daisy Rock website actually calls the back a composite material, but it looks and feels like plastic. This information, regarding the composite back, was not on the Amazon webpage, or the manufacturer's webpage for this guitar, but on the manufacturer's general page for all guitars of this type, so it was easy to miss. The guitar looks nice and probably plays fine, but $300 for a plastic guitar seems a high price. I returned this and got the next model up (wildwood) which appears to be all wood.

After having the worst experience ever ordering a Dean guitar from Amazon I saw this deal a few months later as I was looking for a guitar for my wife. I swore I would never buy from Amazon again and was just using it to compare prices.
I am a seasoned guitarist and very picky.
When I clicked on the price for the Butterfly I was shocked to see it at $109.00 I decided what the heck that is $280.00 off the price it must be a mistake or broken but I went for it anyway.
The Guitar showed up on my doorstep packaged perfectly and in perfect condition one day early WOW! I repeat $109.00. This has to be my greatest find ever. It plays like a dream and is well worth Amazons updated $389.00 asking price.
It sounds great unplugged or plugged in and the workmanship is as good as it gets for the price range "beautiful finish, quality set-up,
nice inlays, stays in tune after hard playing and even came with a nice soft case.
My faith has been restored in Amazon !!

Luna Fauna Butterfly Acoustic/Electric Guitar Review

Luna Fauna Butterfly Acoustic/Electric Guitar
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have short fingers and was thrilled to learn that guitars are being made to fit a woman's hands. To my disappointment, the Fauna Butterfly's frets were 1/16th of an inch shorter than the Alvarez Acoustic guitar that I own which isn't going to make reaching those frets any easier. The neck was just as wide as my Alvarez. In comparison, the Daisy Rock electric that I own has frets a quarter inch shorter than a standard guitar; the neck on the Daisy Rock is more narrow than the Luna. Outside of that, the action was set very nicely; all of the fret markers were perfect (no buzzing). The maple top gives a "brighter" sound than a spruce top, but not as big of a sound as the body is a bit smaller than my standard size acoustic. It plays very well and the electric pickup is nice to have and includes a tuner as well which is a sweet feature. The inlay work is beautiful as is the finish which makes it difficult for me to decide if I'm going to keep this guitar that isn't going to be any easier for me to play. Decisions, decision.!

Luna Trinity Acoustic/Electric Guitar Dreadnought Cutaway - Natural Review

Average Reviews:

I always wanted to learn how to play guitar. I felt if I bought a guitar that was beautiful and inspiring I would stick to it. I found luna guitars to be the most creative guitars of all. I also looked if they played as good as they look. And they did especially when they are in the hands of Vicki Genfan. I had a hard time choosing only one but I finally settled on this one. Pros
-beautiful
-comfortable in my hands
-narrow neck
-build in electronic tuner
-access to the battery from the side
-the artistic hole gives nice projection when played acoustically
-elegant gloss finish
-it holds tuning very well
-the action is low so it is easy to play
-Top: Solid Spruce
-Da'ddario strings
-can be played electrically
Cons
-the wooden pins were not the highest quality so I replaced them with planet waves wooden pins

Luna Flora Lotus Acoustic Guitar, Tranz Plum/Quilted Maple Review

This is an absolutely beautiful guitar. The photo is great, but it is definitely better in person. Lovely, rich sound. Slightly smaller than a dreadnought - which is great for smaller/shorter women. The Luna Flora Lotus has an attached digital tuner which is pretty handy. It was packed very well and shipped out quickly. I am so happy I bought this guitar. Yay!
