Normandy ATGWB-OB Archtop Guitar with Bigsby, Anodized, Obsidian Review

Normandy ATGWB-OB Archtop Guitar with Bigsby, Anodized, Obsidian
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Case out of the shipping box, guitar out of the case, a few tweaks of the tuning keys, and it is amazing. The feel, the sound, the esthetics, the attention to detail; holding it puts it all into perspective and can be summed up in one word, quality! With or without an amp the sound(s) are unbelievable, from the low E to the high E and everything between it is amazing. The tone(s) are consistent, precise, rich, etc., from the initial strike of a string all the way through the trailing note the sound just brings a smile to ones face.
It has been less than a day from when it was delivered and just a couple hours of messing around with the guitar, however, it is apparently flawless, the neck is as smooth as glass, the balance is spot on, the hardware - works of art, as a matter of fact the whole package is a work of art, an engineering marvel! The attention to detail, fret bars smooth and shaped on the ends, strings that run symmetrically down the complete neck correctly spaced and consistent, the overall fit and finish convey pride in craftsmanship (made in the USA). Needless to say, if you haven't already figured it out, I am impressed. [...]
I will share more when I have more time, and time w/the guitar.

Gretsch Guitars G5265 Jet Baritone Electric Guitar, Black Sparkle Review

Gretsch Guitars G5265 Jet Baritone Electric Guitar, Black Sparkle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Gretsch Jet Baritone is a long scale solid body electric guitar that comes setup as a bassVI out of the box which while interesting isn't nearly as cool as a true baritone electric guitar.
BassVI? Baritone?
What's the difference you may ask? A bassVI is essentially a six string electric guitar with a longer scale that is tuned an octave below a standard electric guitar making it a six string bass. It uses lighter gauge strings than a traditional bass but still too heavy for barr chords and is too muddy for chording anyway. A baritone on the other hand is tuned from B to B and uses strings somewhere in-between those used on a bassIV and and a standard electric guitar. A set of light gauge electric baritone strings will be from .062 for the low string to .013 for the highest. (D'Addario Electric Baritone Guitar EXL158)
Converting From BassVI to Baritone
To convert from bassVI to a true baritone entails changing the strings, adjusting the neck tension, reintonating the guitar and raising the pickup heights as these smaller diameter strings need to be closer to the magnets to get the most out of the guitar. This sounds like a lot more work than it actually is. I'm an intermediate at guitar tech work at best, and was able to do it in about an hour and a half. The truss rod adjustment on the headstock is done with an allen wrench and was a breeze to do as you don't need to detune the guitar or remove the pickguard as with some instruments. If this all seems too intimidating it is easy work for any guitar shop's tech.
A Couple Of Notes On Restringing.
There were a couple of issues with restringing the Jet. First the D'Addario EXL158s were barely long enough to fit on this beast. At first I was afraid the 3rd string wasn't long enough to use but it was... b a r e l y. The second is the way the strings attach to the Bigsby Tremelo bridge. There are small straight posts that stick out of a round bar that the strings wrap around. At first I couldn't for the life of me get the strings to stay in place while I was trying to tighten them. I finally found that if I pre-bent the base of the string at the ball end with a pair of needle nose pliers into the approximate shape of the bar they wrap around, they then easily held on until there was sufficient tension for them to stick. All of that said, it has worked well and I haven't had any problems with the strings staying in tune.
Is It Worth All That?
So, what is it like to play and is it worth the money and the work to convert it? Absolutely. The Jet is a joy to play. The neck is really nice and doesn't take anymore finger pressure that an acoustic to get a great tone. It has 2 mini humbucking pickups that share a single volume and tone knob to good effect along with a 3 position toggle switch for pickup selection. With a bit of reverb and tremolo it becomes the biggest clean guitar tone you've ever heard. Huge and clear. For recording it's a voice that sits in it's own pocket with plenty of room for standard guitars above and traditional bass below. That said, I have done entire recordings with just this guy and they sound fantastic. I use the tremolo just for subtle effects and haven't had any problems with it throwing the guitar out of tune. Using it for dive bombing will throw it out of tune but this is a known problem with all Bigsby tremolo bridges.
Would I buy this guitar again? Yeah,In a heartbeat.

PRS SE Custom Semi-Hollow Guitar, Natural Review

PRS SE Custom Semi-Hollow Guitar, Natural
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just a really, really nice guitar for the money. It soon became my main guitar, played a lot more than my telly, jaguar, or any other.
set up perfect right out of the box
Clear as a bell but distorts nicely too, very playable, looks great, workmanship is near flawless

Click Here to see more reviews about: PRS SE Custom Semi-Hollow Guitar, Natural

The SE Custom Semi-Hollow has the same basic appointments as the SE Custom--mahogany back, maple top, 22-fret wide-fat mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard and SE humbucking pickups. The addition of a hollow chamber and modern f-hole give it a musical midrange and internal reverb making this a very light, comfortable and versatile guitar.

The SE Custom Semi-Hollow
The First SE Semi-Hollow The SE Custom Semi-Hollow is PRS' very first semi-hollow SE model guitar. All of the same features of the SE Custom are now available in a light-weight semi-hollow package featuring a unique pallet of colors.
HFS Pickups Originally meaning Hot, Fat and Screams, the HFS features a powerful ceramic magnet and hot coils for an aggressive tone when cranked, clear highs, searing midrange and thumping bass.
The SE Custom semi-hollow produces a wide range of tonal possibilities enhanced by a variety of switching options including master volume, master tone, and 3-way toggle pickup selector.
Wide Fat Neck The Wide Fat neck has the same nut width as the Wide Thin neck but has a big comfortable profile, similar to PRS's Regular neck. Because of its strength and longer "heel," the Wide Fat neck produces warm tones with lots of sustain.
PRS Stoptail Bridge Designed to take full advantage of the resonant properties of their guitars, PRS's Stoptail Bridge provides direct transmission of string vibration to the guitar body and makes set-up a breeze. First used in 1991 on the PRS Dragon I guitar, it now appears on almost half of all PRS guitars sold. This bridge features slots that recess the strings comfortably as they pass over the top, in a gentle curve. Although it is pre-compensated for modern string gauges, fine-tuning is possible by adjusting the set screws at each end of the bridge.
SE Custom Semi-Hollow Available Colors The SE Custom Semi-Hollow is available in Black, Natural, and Tobacco Sunburst finishes
Finish PRS finishes their instruments with a polyester basecoat and acrylic urethane topcoat. Acrylic urethane looks and feels the closest to the old nitro-cellulose finishes but without the finish checking.
The PRS Mission Statement Guitar building is an ongoing process of discovery. We are devoted to the guitar's rich heritage while committed to new technologies that will enrich our products with uncompromised tone, playability and beauty. Our success depends on our ability to listen, implement positive change and continually refine our craft.

Epiphone Emperor Swingster Hollowbody Electric Guitar Trans Black Review

Epiphone Emperor Swingster Hollowbody Electric Guitar Trans Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This axe is awesome! After checking out multiple hollowbodies, I narrowed down my choices between this and the Gretsch G5120 which sells for the same price. The main things that sold me on this guitar that differ from the Gretsch are the Bigsby wire arm, the roller bridge, and the pickups. The wire arm is more useful than the standard flat one because you can hold it while picking. The roller bridge keeps the strings in perfect tune. (Seriously... I can't get this thing to go OUT of tune! It holds a tune better than my strat w/ locking tuners!!) The series/parallel pickup switching is also a great bonus, offering a limitless array of tone. And the thin profile neck allows you play a little faster, surprisingly. I'm not usually a fan of Epiphone, but this isn't just another Gibson copy. This guitar is unique to the brand and they really nailed it on this one. It does not feel as inexpensive as it is, and I would even go as far to say that this is better than many of the Gibson hollowbodies I checked out. My only issue with it: good luck finding a case that fits with the wire arm because I can't find one anywhere in retail stores or on the internet. I have a thick acoustic gig bag that works just fine, but thumbs down on Epiphone for not making a matching case for this. Even still, that's only a minor setback... just get a nice gig bag and don't throw it around. Overall, this guitar is AMAZING... Amazing value, craftsmanship, features, playability, and tone!

Hagstrom Viking II UltraLux Left-Handed Electric Guitar (Cosmic Black Burst) Review

Hagstrom Viking II UltraLux Left-Handed Electric Guitar (Cosmic Black Burst)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I Now own TWO Hagstrom Ultralux Viking II's.
My other is a Viking IIP & I just adore the Mother-of-Pearl inlay names on the Headstock.
The High Quality Craftsmanship in every detail! I was concerned since Hagstrom closed their doors in '83 & these new Lovely Beasts are now being built in China! Make no concern in your mind because the workmanship is STILL there!
All the products are high quality from the Canadian Maple wood to the Highly Tooled components.
I was told that purchasing a Guitar from a company like Amazon would cause me to acquire a SECOND that came from a clearing house. WRONG in every way!
This Hag still had the plastic protection sheeting over the pickups and pick guard!
There was no component that was NOT original and this Hag had not even a finger print on him!
Amazon is my one stop shopping and has been since I was stationed, with the Navy, overseas a decade ago!
I registered my Hagstrom right away on [...] using the serial number found on every Hagstrom on it's Silver Serial Plate found on the back of the body near the neck.
HAVE NO FEAR purchasing the Best Hollow Body Guitar from Amazon!
Left-Handers finally have a place to find their guitars!

Epiphone Sheraton II Archtop Electric Guitar, Natural Review

Epiphone Sheraton II Archtop Electric Guitar, Natural
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had the Sheraton II for a couple of years. It was in need of some basic setup and "re-humidification" after it's stay at Guitar Center. Sometimes your hear complaints about the pickups, but when they are correctly adjusted they are really quite good. The multipiece neck is quite stable and pleasantly chunky in size.
Detail quality is excellent, which is why so many get this guitar when they are searching for a Gibson 335. Why spend the extra $2000? I could not find a 335 without blems and quality finish issues anyway.
This guitar is not my primary guitar, but is the semi-hollow I have wanted. It is good. I have the natural finish, but the sunburst is very attractive.
The tuning machines are adequate, not superb.
Fretboard is excellent, inlays superb, wood is excellent.
I rate this much higher than the Epi Dots I tested.

When shopping for a semi hollow, I kept looking back to this guitar. After playing Gretch and Gibsons at well over twice the cost, I couldn't deny that this provided all the warmth and roundness I was looking for. I've had it over ten years, touring and the only problem came from another player breaking off the toggle switch. Hardly a fault of the guitar's. Great buy.

Epiphone Sheraton II Archtop Electric Guitar, Vintage Sunburst Review

Epiphone Sheraton II Archtop Electric Guitar, Vintage Sunburst
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the second Epiphone guitar I've owned. The first was a hollowbody Casino (Casinos are often mistaken for semi-hollowbody) and the Sheraton is my second.
How do they compare? While the Casino is more jangly, its full hollowbody and P90 pickups means that it is prone to feedback, even at moderate volumes, so you really need to pay attention to where you're standing in relation to speakers. The Sheraton doesn't have these problems. The Casino was lighter...
Both of these guitars are great. However, I prefer my Sheraton. I bought a used one for $400. The original owner had changed the tuners and the pots. The guitar now looks more like a Sheraton Elitist, which are something like $1,300, if I'm not mistaken. The original humbuckers are pretty good. They deliver a wide tonal range that, while not as bright as the Casino's twin P90s, do not have the tendency to feedback or get piercing.
The gutiar looks great too! I have a sunburst, lighter than a typical sunburst. Its more like a honeyburst. The body is bound, the neck has two running lines going down the back. The fret markers are the best, though; pearloid 1935 "V" cut. Check those out! The headstock logo's real sharp too. For looks, the only thing lacking on the Sheraton is the tailpiece. That's almost purley cosmetic though, but I wish the Sheraton had the Casino or, preferably, the Riviera/ Emperor tailpeice.
My used Sheraton needed a good set-up. That set me back about $70, but was worth it. So, I got this guitar, set-up, plus a beaten-up case for $509 (that's after shipping expenses too). You'd be hard pressed to find a better guitar at $500. Go to a store and play a Sheraton if you don't believe me!

These days there are plenty of great guitars out there, but in my honest opinion, the Normandy's are in a class all of their own. The quality and craftsmanship are top notch, but what really sets these guitars apart from the rest is the ultra sweet tone of expertly designed aluminum bodies. The first time I heard one I was absolutely floored! To play one is nothing short of pure bliss, and they come in Chrome! Way beyond cool. You're wife will definitely be jealous.

Hagstrom Tremar Viking Deluxe Electric Guitar (Metallic Gold) Review

Hagstrom Tremar Viking Deluxe Electric Guitar (Metallic Gold)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Hagstrom Viking Tremar is the best all-around 355 style guitar that I have tried. It compares well to other semi-hollows that are twice or three times the price. The gold metallic color adds an extra dimension. The paint is perfect and appears to have a durable finish. The tremar vibrato is a bit easier to use than the standard Bigsbies (I have a Bigsby on my Les Paul). The Hagstrom designed end allows for a better grip.
On delivery, the strings needed replacement (rusty from storage I guess). I put a set of DR Strings Pure Blues on the guitar. Tremar stringing requires a bit of patience to get the strings positioned correctly, but once they were in place - fantastic!
I am using this to play surf/spy rock guitar in the style of Duane Eddy. Very cool. Tremar a must. Also, my blues lessons sound better with the Hagstrom (paired to a Fender amp). Even using it unplugged (a benefit of having a semi-hollow). The neck is smooth and easy to navigate. No complaints there. The black pickguard with the gold Hagstrom logo looks like it belongs there.
Am ordering a Hagstrom case to go with this so I can bring it with me the next time I'm on the road.

Hagstrom Tremar Viking Deluxe Electric Guitar (Cream Red) Review

Hagstrom Tremar Viking Deluxe Electric Guitar (Cream Red)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I think the Gibson ES-335 is the best overall electric guitar. But it costs thousands of dollars. And when I listened to it blindly vs a decently made semi-hollow guitar of the same body shape, I'd barely notice the difference in sound quality. So I went hunting for a reasonably priced semi-hollow for myself and finally bought this one.
I really love this guitar. I read good reviews of it, but couldn't find it in a local store to try out first. So I just gambled on it when I saw it for a "see price in cart" that was several hundred dollars lower than I could find anywhere else. Price is back up to expected levels at this moment, but even at this price, this guitar is great and I'd buy it again at this price. I was initially worried because the guitar is made in china (most guitars unfortunately are). However, the workmanship seems quite good and I went over it pretty thoroughly. Fretboard is very smooth, the frets are level, and even the intonation was almost perfect right out of the box. The neck is very very thin, and yet it doesn't appear twisted or off in any way. The factory setup was much better than I expected. The sound both amplified and unplugged is great. The tremar (bigsby) works well with its enlarged grip and the guitar stays in tune pretty well after using it. This is probably the best 335 style guitar at this price range. I almost bought an Epiphone Sheraton II (which I sampled in a few stores), but after I received this, I almost immediately knew the Viking was better. I encourage you to at least try this guitar out. I think you'll be surprised how good it is. I kinda wish the "cream red" was a little bit darker or richer, but that's just a very minor detail. It's still a very good looking red.
A few things that noticeably stand out to me about the Viking vs a 335. The instrument jack is in a more traditional spot on its side (the 335 jack is on its face, by the pots). The pickup switch is above the neck pickup, not by the pots (335). I think both of those favor the Viking's design. I don't want to hit either of these inadvertently on an aggressive downstroke. 335 has fancier and smaller F holes. The Viking's seem large and not nearly as attractive. The Viking headstock has an off-center design, but it's very attractive. I like the unique appearance of it. And the Viking has a tailpiece. In terms of appearance, the 335 probably looks better without a tailpiece, but I think the tailpiece (with its coat of arms logo) does add to the uniqueness of the Viking.
The Viking II & IIP are quite different from the Viking, Viking Deluxe, and Viking Deluxe w/Tremar. They have noticeably different hardware and design differences.
If you're wondering whether to get the Viking Deluxe or just the Viking (about a hundred dollar difference), here's what I noticed differs. First, the Deluxe has block inlays on the fretboard (not dot). Second, the wood is flamed (really visible if the guitar's finish is translucent or natural). One nice aspect unique to the Viking Deluxe w/Tremar: it has metallic knobs, not plastic. I can't tell exactly what they're made of (probably stainless steel), but it's definitely heavier, and looks & feels much better than plastic. (The models without the Tremar have normal knobs.) Fourth, the truss rod cover on the headstock says "Viking Deluxe" on it. As far as I can tell, these are the differences. Would I say the Deluxe is better looking? Yes. It's up to you if it's worth the extra price. I think the Deluxe w/Tremar is the best looking of the 3, but again, up to you whether it's worth the additional cost and whether you'd use a Tremar.
Here's what these models have in addition to the standard Viking:
Deluxe: Flamed wood finish, Block fretboard inlays
Deluxe w/Tremar: same as Deluxe, but also with Stainless steel knobs & tremar (obviously)
Anyway, I'd recommend you buy this guitar. But even if you don't, at least give this guitar a try. You'll probably be surprised like I was. By the way, it does NOT include a case. So budget another $100 or so for a hard case. Aside from the packaging materials, it includes two allen wrenches in a small pouch (for saddle and truss rod adjustments). But it has no documentation whatsoever. (serial # is on the back of the headstock)

Hagstrom HJ800 Electric Jazz Guitar (Natural Mahogany) Review

Hagstrom HJ800 Electric Jazz Guitar (Natural Mahogany)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was looking for an archtop for under $1000. I have played friends' Ibanez Artcores and they just feel & sound like student instruments. I was looking into Godins and then came across this instrument at an unbeatable price (lower than list, I think these are not selling well now). All I can say is, WOW! As soon as I opened the case I was impressed with the beauty and quality of the instrument. It feels and sounds fantastic. While I primarily use the neck pickup, the bridge adds a nice bright sound when you want it. I think a lot of people shy away from Hagstrom because they are now assembled in China, but the hardware on this guitar is solid. Not to mention the most comfortable neck I have played in a long time. I found a number of online videos and forums comparing this to Gibson 335's and panning the Hagstrom as second rate, honestly you expect it to sound better than a $3,000 instrument, that's insane. I have no idea why this instrument is not as popular as Epis and Artcores in the same price range. A quality instrument at a low price, buy one before the word gets out
