Tech 21 PSA-1.1 SansAmp PSA-1.1 Programmable 1U Rackmount Review

Tech 21 PSA-1.1 SansAmp PSA-1.1 Programmable 1U Rackmount
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an awesome preamp! great tone, my guitar snarls and squeals like never before. Does it feel like a tube amp? not quite but its close in terms of response to playing dynamics. Missing some of the harmonic nuances of tube tone decay*... but hey, if you have $$ to drop on a triaxis or a real amp (which you probably couldn't use in an apartment), you shouldn't be looking here anyway. Note: the little handles on the side are black, not silver as shown in the picture.
*e.g. ~4:50, comfortably numb on Pulse

Mutron III Plus Envelope Filter Pedal Review

Mutron III Plus Envelope Filter Pedal
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are many almost as good but none that will capture Jerry's "WOMP" like the pedal he actually uses, the original 1970's Mutron III (not+) His is the original cicuit from the 1970's. This one sounds as close as anything to that likely. Many musicians/guitarists swear the
"Dis-cum-BOB-ulator" by EMMA is nice, Q-Tron better,
If you are lookin' for Jerry's sound, or just a whole lotta FUN this pedal will provide that for you. You will not regret buying it.
I have a Maxon Auto Filter (got it for cheap), which has an analog circuit and is great fun, but the effect is set at the factory too fast/quick in its timing---not enough sustain when clean-relative to my optimum vision, which is largely formed from Jerry's sound.
!!! IF ITS NOT A LIVING BABY, THEN YOU'RE NOT PREGNANT !!!

Electro-Harmonix 2880 Super Multi-track Looper Review

Electro-Harmonix 2880 Super Multi-track Looper
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The 2880 wants to be so much, but misses the mark at times and as such--arguably must take a second chair to the RC-50.
To consider it in a world where no other looper was available, it has some great features (i.e. big switches and loads of time for the four tracks it does offer); but in a world where having the option to select a different bank for a fresh series of loops on the fly exists, the 2880 has no such option. This means you must save the four tracks you just recorded (without any easily visible 'undo' or 'clear' option for each individual track) prior to creating a new set of loops OR lose what you've recorded so far in the process.
The reverse and octave features are nice for mixing layering effects and such you wish to accomplish using only the looper. The addition of a 5th mix-down track is unique, but oddly out of place given the initial limitations on recording. Quantize and Clix features should showcase some of the lofty goals the designers had for this pedal, but instead they highlight the flaws and limitations (no visible BPM, slider to change value, single sound).
If you consider yourself a pedal collector or an organic-loop purist (although this model eschews that analog philosophy for a digital stab at recreating analog action) you might want to add and keep this in your arsenal for its rich history and on-board, on-the-fly mixing and layering options.
If you are looking for a looper with on-board versatility, a deep rhythm section, multiple track recording with multiple storage banks--look elsewhere.

Electro-Harmonix Stereo Polychorus Pedal Review

Electro-Harmonix Stereo Polychorus Pedal
Average Reviews:

This is a great chorus pedal, except the expensive out-weighs the greatness.
EH pedals need to bring their prices down a tad
other than that an awesome pedal.
I play bass through it and it works great.
So really great for whatever instrument you want to run through it. Many knob configuration can also let you get some weird sounds out of it.

Electro Harmonix Micro Synth Pedal Review

Electro Harmonix Micro Synth Pedal
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you've heard me live, this is one of my signature sounds. I'm not sure if Jeff Beck used one of the original micro-synths on Blow By Blow, but it sure sounds like it. If anyone knows, please drop me a line. The MS is cool not just for the sounds you get from it, but for the sounds you can get using it early in your signal-processing chain. In other words, go direct from your guitar into the MS, use it to shape your envelope and then run that into your other effects. Quite un-guitar-like sounds can ensue. A ton of fun!

Electro-Harmonix Tube Zipper Review

Electro-Harmonix Tube Zipper
Average Reviews:

Awsome pedal........not for everyone. I use this with a tube amp and is unreal the freaky sounds you can get. The key with this pedal is the up down switch which controls the direction of the Q. Every time you move the switch you must change the frequency knobs to get the sound you like. Great for wah flutters, scooped wah filter sounds, and all out mayhem. If your looking for a normal wah this is not it, if you want to be different this is a great pedal.

Rocktron Gainiac 2 Tube Guitar/Bass Preamp Review

Rocktron Gainiac 2 Tube Guitar/Bass Preamp
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For the money, this a very decent preamp. I really have to review it with 4 stars, although I feel for the the average musician it would be a 3. First lets get to the pros:
Its rugged, small, and compact. I bought 2, one was a backup I never used. They stood up to the wear and tear of touring. The Gainiac II has a VERY awesome clean tone, the classic warm tube sound. I actually know a lot of bands that have used this preamp to record clean tones. Its wonderful and really can't be beat IMO. The distortion channel is also very good. A nice clear sound, not the static fuzz that extreme distortion causes. Great for hard rock/80s (I used to cover some Van Halen songs that it was perfect for). I wouldn't say its going to give you a death metal tone without pedal assitance, but if you want a clear responsive distortion, this is it. I saw a lot of complaints on Musician Friend's website that the Gainiac lacks a thickness and tone, but I honestly cannot hear it. I used DiMarzio Evolution pickups and the Apex Aural Exciter in front and powered it with an ART Sla-1 power amp so perhaps that is why I never heard this lack of tone.
Ok the cons:
The tube is very hard to get out. Don't get me wrong, its an awesome tube but there is always room for improvement. The Gainiac II is noisy on the overdrive channel. This can be solved fairly easily with the power amp and a good noise gate. I used the noise gate on my processor and it fixed everything right up, but some may not be as fortunate to have a good gate. There is only one output on this unit, which I got by fine with. There are no effects, just a clean and overdrive channel, which was ok for what I was doing. Also, there is no on/off switch and the AC adapter is fairly large. Recording directly into a computer gave kind of a rough tone but I'm not a recording expert.
My verdict is if you're looking for a preamp/power amp guitar rig, give this little unit a try. Its hard to fine the good Line 6 preamp that used to sell for $500, and the only other preamp I would ever consider is the Prophecy (which will break bank). You will have to do some tweaking, but for the money I think the Gainiac deserves a little attention and some surprising tones can be achieved. Also, for the price, you can afford to decide if the pre/power setup will be right for you. If this isn't something that you want to keep on a live rig, it will always be there for tracking down cleans in studio.

Electro-Harmonix HOG Synthesizer Review

Electro-Harmonix HOG Synthesizer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just got my HOG today, and although I cant give a thorough review of the product I will give you mi first impressions.
I cant give a thorough review mainly because this is an instrument in itself and will require months of use to master it... perhaps years! I own a Micro Synth and it is far less complicated and it took me a whole year to really get comfortable with it, and I'm still learning new sounds and new techniques each time I use it.
Unlike the Micro Synth this is polyphonic and tracks full chords. However I've found that it tracks 3 strings better, sometimes 6 string chords fart out a little.
Picking chords quickly can also produces some unwanted motor-boating. But with the right setting and the right technique it sounds pretty awesome, and they arent hard to do. I'm not that great of a guitar player and I found it right off.
The expression pedal makes it the most fun of all. Freeze + Gliss being the most notable.
Now I can do away with my crappy Jim Dunlop volume pedal and I dont have to get the EHX Freeze (since this has both functions).
Over all its pretty easy to use and very noob friendly.

Electro-Harmonix Ring Thing Modulator Guitar Effects Pedal Review

Electro-Harmonix Ring Thing Modulator Guitar Effects Pedal
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I always wanted to explore a ring modulator. This is not a one-trick pony thou. You have a tunable ring mod, tremolo, pitch shifter, upper band mod, low band mod along with a few weird things in between. This is a fun pedal for exploring non-traditional modulation applications. If you want a safe pretty effect, this may not suit your taste. This pedal goes beyond metal. It's electric guitar synthesis. Bell tones, sci-fi sounds, ethnic timbres. If you're looking for something new in sound, this is it.

Electro-Harmonix Stereo Memory Man with Hazarai Delay Looper Pedal Review

Electro-Harmonix Stereo Memory Man with Hazarai Delay Looper Pedal
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although all the rest of my pedals are analog, I thought I would go for this little puppy for the following reasons: 1) I was looking for a delay with tap ability to create a nice shimmering sound that would complement the other guitarist in our band. This has tap functionality and up to 3 seconds of delay time. 2) It comes with the ability to modulate your sound to some extent, creating chorus and flange-like effects. 3) It has a boat load of other functions, like loops, reverse effects, etc. 4) It's programmable. 5) I like Electro Harmonix products in general. 6) It's relatively inexpensive for what it has. 7) It has stereo-ins and outs. 8) It doesn't suck tone and signal strength. 9) It looks great.
I guess you could see this as a list of the pedals "pros." Thus far I've tested in out for only 2 hours or so, but it's lived up to my expectations. It actually has way more functionality than I wanted, but I'm looking forward to exploring and creating new sounds. For about two hundred, this is a great deal.
There are a few "cons" and they are: (1) It takes a while to learn how to use. The manual is _essential_ here. Right off the bat it tells you how to get a simple delay. I demo'd it in the store (Guitar Center) and I couldn't figure out how to get it to work. It was creating all sorts of crazy loops and I couldn't even shut the loops off! It was totally going crazy! So, if you don't know what you're doing, you shouldn't mess with this pedal. Fortunately, the manual looks very clear and although long (10 pages or more?) I think after I read through all of it I'll be clear on things. Actually, the fact that the pedal was going crazy when I demo'd it was cool, because now I know I can do all that crazy stuff (not that I'd really use that in a gig).
(2) It's only adaptor-powered, no possibility of battery use.
(3) It's digital. If you absolutely must have an analog delay, then you might check out the new MXR Carbon Copy, which is a bit cheapter, is smaller and is analog. Everyone says it's a great pedal. However, it can't do any of the other cool jazz this baby can do, and doesn't have tap tempo. Or for more money -- about three hundred -- you can get the analog Memory Man which everyone raves about. Or a Maxon delay. But the sound on this is close enough for me, and the analog delays don't have the features this one has.
(4) You can't switch presets with your foot. You have to bend down and turn the Hazarai (white) knob. You could raise the pedal to where you could reach it with your hand, but then you can't stomp on it (for the tap tempo). I'm not sure what to do with this conundrum just yet. Probably I'll only have 2-3 presets that I'll use in a gig and I'll just have to reach down and turn it when I have to?
In conclusion, I did a fair amount of research on delay pedals and demo'd a few in stores. For the money, I think this is a good pedal. It has 2 extra knobs more than a usual delay pedal (not counting the Hazarai knob) and that lets you adjust your sound to make it more analog-like or add some reverb-like effect, which is neat. It's functional, wacky if you want it to be, and it looks great!
* * *
Edit: I have now owned this pedal for about three months. It is great, and has loads of possibilities. Only thing I miss about it, is that it lacks an easy way to switch presets (you have to bend down and turn the Hazarai knob and push it, which you can try to do with your feet, but it's pretty hard!). No regrets about buying it though.

Electro-Harmonix Micro Synthesizer XO Analog Guitar Microsynth Review

Electro-Harmonix Micro Synthesizer XO Analog Guitar Microsynth
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First and foremost, this is NOT a polyphonic pedal meaning that it only handles single notes. Secondly, do not expect to plug this baby in and be able to know what you're doing right off the bat. There is a fair learning curve that comes with this pedal, but once you understand each parameter, you will have access to hundred of combinations of those parameters and unique, exciting sounds.
The octave section of this pedal features parameters for three octave voices and your original, dry signal. The sub-octave can make your guitar sound very bass-like, but can also break up and become glitchy with lower notes (some guitarists actually prefer the bass microsynth to handle these lower notes). The octave up didn't particularly impress me, but was useful when used with the original, dry signal - don't expect any tycobrahe octavio tones from this. The square wave is VERY synthy and can add a whole mess of nasty to your signal.
Moving down the line of parameters, the attack delay is next. This is a really neat effect that could probably be a single stompbox in its own right. You can get some cool bowed type sounds from this.
Finally, the filter sweep section of the pedals - this section is where things can get really crazy. The start and stop parameters control the frequency where the signal begins and where it ends. With both sliders down, you can get a low-pass filter type of effect. Both sliders fully up will preserve the original frequency throughout without any sweep. The rate control handles how quickly the sound progresses from the start to stop parameters. You can get some cool envelope filter type quacks when this is set lower or some drawn out synthy sweeps when it is fully up.
The two parameters I didn't really touch on are trigger and resonance. One controls the sensitivity that triggers the filter sweep. The other (resonance) can sort of be described as the intensity of the sweep sound.
Bottom line: great pedal with many, many possibilities for the open-minded guitarist.
