Basically the whole selling point of this bass is its alleged fast neck that "plays like a dream." I was looking for something like that, even if I knew the hardware and electronics were sub-par. I wanted playability.
Unfortunately, this bass did not deliver it. It had a few nasty buzzes that only diminished slightly with intense work on the truss rod and bridge saddles. And by "work" I mean RAISING the action to a rather uncomfortable level.
If you're a slapper, stay away from this bass. The neck pickup is so close to the neck that it will get in your way.
The bass felt chunky and weird, even using my premium padded Fender strap.
The sound was good. Very aggressive and bright. It also looks pretty nice. Other than that, it was a complete disaster. Sorry, Jeff. At least he's admitted that this cheaper version is obviously not even close to the bass he plays, and that it does need work. But, if it's going to need a pro setup just to play acceptably, and a replacement of the bridge and electronics (as he suggested to me in his reply to a myspace message I sent him), you're better off buying a different bass.
I got me an Aria IGB-49 and it is MILES above this thing, for only a few bucks more.
Jeff Berlin is still one of the greatest bassists ever, and this shouldn't reflect badly on him. I'm sure Dean Guitars just made some choices over which he had probably little to no control.
