(More customer reviews)Ok, got this guitar yesterday for $299.99. I thought coming from a $1000.00 price tag down to $299.99 would be worth a try. I read about the Hofner on other reviews on different web sites, all were good.
After initially inspecting the guitar I found that mine was an initial return and someone already played on it. I just can tell that some factory protective clears stickers were missing, plus one of the guitar strap buttons had wear around it, but I was able to buff it off. Things that needed immidiate attention:
-Strings had to be replaced, had "wear and tear" marks
-Neck relief was ok, but I tightened the truss rod a tad
-Action was way up to high and needed adjustment
-The pickups needed to be brought down a little since they were too close to the strings and started to somewhat distort the tone
Other things: the nut is not seated and finished nicely. It needs some future work or actually replacement. It looks bad and is made out of plastic. The fret board is spotless, so are the frets. Not one fret is is loose or is higher than any other frets, they all line up nicely and don't cause fret buzz, at least not the frets. The pickups sound cheap and tiny. The controls are very limited, basically on and off. Still, when fiddeling with them a bit you get an "ok" tone out of it. The fingerboard is loose and needs some adjustment. It holds on with one screw and one nail (!), yes, a nail.. it looks like it came that way from the factory..and there is a nice "Made in China" sticker on the back of the neck.
So, all in all, this guitar is NOT ready to be played out of the box, not even close. Sure, most of new guitars need some setup to get going, but this one needs the whole nine yards. And as the title stats, it does have potential.
I am still wondering how on earth this guitar was sold once for a $1000.00 ...
Edit: I returned the guitar 3 days later... do yourself a favor and stay away from it. It's junk.
