I've been surprised and delighted with my 5120 since I saw it on the wall at the music store. It has decent sound with good electronics, and the neck is one of the best I've ever played, well shaped and finished. I've always liked Bigsby trems, and this one is why. BTW, mine has the silver pickguard with the Gretsch logo. Looks great. Couldn't be more satisfied with this guitar.

Epiphone LP Custom Les Paul Collection Electric Guitar, Antique White Review

Epiphone LP Custom Les Paul Collection Electric Guitar, Antique White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have owned the Alpine White Epiphone Les Paul Custom for two years.
Previously, I have owned two American standard Fender Stratocasters (both were professionally set up) and niether one of them played as well or sounded better than this Epiphone Les Paul. If you are lucky enough to buy one of these beauties, do yourself a favor and have a luthier set it up. The neck is straight, the body is solid, and the tone is good. The only reason this gets 4 stars instead of 5, is that in my opinion the pick-ups and tone could be slightly better. But then again, if you really need that, get a Gibson.
I would not hesitate to recommend this guitar. It is solid.

Yamaha CG192C Cedar Top Classical Guitar Review

Yamaha CG192C Cedar Top Classical Guitar
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Yamaha builds a guitar that is efficient and easy to play. The construction is simple and clean. Now, that's sufficient for their entry level guitars (I picked up a Yamaha F335 Acoustic Guitar, Natural for less than one Ben Franklin - see my review), however, at 5x that amount, that just doesn't cut it anymore. This guitar has zero character. It hits all the notes without any issues, but the sound it produces can only be described as plain vanilla. For the beginning student that may be OK, but why spend the extra $ for this model when it sounds and plays pretty much the same as its lesser brethren? The better grade of materials used in this do not seem to translate into better sound quality - and isn't that why one would drop the extra $ in the first place?
If you want a classical guitar that hands-down produces a rich, wonderful tone that has character, I'm, afraid you'll have to drop some serious $ on a José Ramírez. At this price point, I'd shop around to try to find something that approaches the Ramírez sound - a tall order, for sure.
P.S. Don't bother with Takamine, either. I played one that was 2x the price of this Yamaha and, while it did have a better feel and produce a slightly better tone, the Japanese guitars just don't capture that wonderful Spanish guitar sound.

Sounds great. Plenty of power for most situations. Incredible price. Only one problem: Do NOT use guitar cords with "compression springs" like the Planet Waves. They will damage the input jacks. Otherwise, it's a truly outstanding amp.

This is my second AXL guitar. For the money you can't beat them. Setup done in the US. Pickups just fine for the price range...single coils are relatively quiet and HB is great for the nasty stuff. Typically Alder or other dense wood and not the soft light stuff that impacts sustain.

Yamaha NTX700 Acoustic Electric Classical Guitar Review

Yamaha NTX700 Acoustic Electric Classical Guitar
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In the Summer of 2009, Yamaha introduced their NX series of electric acoustic nylon string guitars. The NX series is divided between the NTX and NCX. NCX inherits many of the physical attributes of a traditional classical guitar with the exception of a cutaway and lower string height. The NTX has a more contemporary design to make steel string and electric guitarist feel more at home. There are four NTX models: NTX700, NTX700BL, NTX900FM, and NTX1200R. The difference between the 700, 900, and 1200 involves wood choices. The dimensions and electronics are identical for all NTX models. The 700 offers a solid spruce top with Nato back, sides, and neck.
The NTX700 is what some people are calling a crossover classical guitar. Besides the electronic pickups, what makes a crossover classical guitar is the physical characteristics of the guitar. The NTX700 has a narrower and thinner neck. The nut width is 48mm compared to 52mm for a traditional classical guitar. Most steel strings have a nut width around 42mm, so 48mm is about in the middle of a classical and steel string. The neck is thinner measured from the fretboard to the back of the neck. The thinner neck can be provided thanks to the adjustable steel truss rod. The truss rod also allows for lower action since the neck can be slightly curved to accommodate the sweep of the string vibration.
As a comparison, I measured string spacing at the nut and bridge on the NTX700 and then on my traditional classical guitar. I am measuring the distance between the 1st and 6th strings. The NTX700 has a 37mm nut string spacing and a 52mm bridge string spacing. My traditional classical has a 42.5mm nut string spacing and a 56mm bridge string spacing. I should let you know that I am a full breed classical guitarist, playing primarily classical and fingerstyle repertoire. Wider string spacing is generally beneficial to classical and fingerstyle repertoire due to the need to individually pluck strings with your fingers, and to have to let open strings resonate next to fretted strings. The latter can be a problem with narrow string spacing because the finger fretting a string can accidentally dampen the neighboring resonating open string. This can kill harmonies needed in solo arrangements. But I personally find a 52mm nut too wide for my hands. When I picked up the NTX700, I immediately noticed the narrower string spacing. To me, it feels perfect. Not too wide to be painfully uncomfortable, and not too narrow to limit solo arrangements.
The NTX700 body joins at the 14th fret. This is common in steel string and electric guitars. It allows for easier access to the NTX700's 22 frets. This ended up being one of the physical changes over a traditional classical that surprised me as being quite significant. A 14th fret body joint changes the distance between the bridge and sound hole. It is shorter on the NTX700. The distance from the bridge to the middle of the sound hole is 135mm on the NTX700. On my traditional classical, it is 180mm. How is that important? A classical guitarist can vary tone by playing at different distances from the bridge. When a string is plucked close to the bridge, it sounds thin. When plucked, close to the sound hole, it is rounder and darker. With the NTX700, I can vary tone with just a slight movement of my right hand. It took me a while to figure out why the NTX700 seemed more expressive than my traditional classical. I have concluded it is more expressive because of the 14th fret body joint.
The NTX700 has curved frets, or has what is called a radius fretboard. Traditional classical guitars have a flat fretboard. I love the radius fretboard of the NTX700. I don't see going back to a flat fretboard. Doing bars is a magnitude order easier on the NTX700. It is beyond me why classical guitars have not adopted a radius fretboard. Classical guitars are about the only type of guitar that still has a flat fretboard. Steel string and electrics have been built this way for decades.
The NTX700 has pretty low action. I took my traditional classical into the shop and told them to get the action as low as possible without having fret buzz problems. The NTX700's action is lower than my traditional classical, but a bit higher than my flamenco. With all these things, the narrower and thinner neck, low action, and radius fredboard, after playing the NTX700 for while, and then going back to my traditional classical, I felt like I went from driving an Audi A4 to a 1950 Chevy truck with no power steering and manual transmission! The traditional classical now feels huge! The fretboard feels like a big wall! The NTX700 is a magnitude order easier to play. Passages that were once hard, are now much easier and I am less likely to mess up. I am also much more comfortable playing the NTX700. I play the guitar for pleasure. If I am straining to do a stretch with a big grimace on my face, I am not experiencing pleasure. So I want a guitar to be comfortable in order for it to be pleasurable to play.
Intonation on the NTX700 is very accurate throughout the whole neck. Also, I like that the NTX700 has marking on the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 12th, 15th, and 17th frets. Traditional classicals generally skimp on putting these little white dots. One dimension that is consistent with a traditional classical guitar is the scale length. The NTX700 has a 650mm scale length.
The NTX700 has a thinner body. Body depth measures 80-90mm compared to around 100mm for traditional classicals. The thinner body is cool. It has several benefits. It makes for better balance and positioning when using a strap. It also makes it easier to see the frets because you can hold the fretboard closer to your body. The thinner body acoustically will not have the same volume. I would say my NTX700 produces about 80% the volume and about 90% the sustain acoustically compared to my traditional classical. In some respects, this is a good thing because it helps reduce feedback. If you plan on using your NTX700 primarily unplugged, then you are buying the wrong guitar. The NTX700 has superb pickups that begs the guitar to be amplified. In my opinion, you should be using your NTX700 plugged in most of the time to get the full benefit of this wonderful guitar.
The NTX700 has a larger lower bout. Acoustically, I'm not sure what this does, but you should be aware, if you have a snug fitting classical guitar case, the NTX700 will not fit in the case because of the larger lower bout. The NTX700 is longer end to end than a traditional classical. This also could present case issues. With these dimension changes, the NTX700 still feels normal when resting on the left leg with a foot stool. It also feels fine on the right leg or with a strap. The NTX700 balances at the top strap mount. The jack doubles as the bottom strap mount.
Even with the reduced volume, I prefer the purely acoustic tone of the NTX700 over my traditional classical. This, of course, is highly subjective. There is something about the acoustical tone of the NTX700 that I love. After much experimenting, I believe I love the sound of the NTX700 because it has less sympathetic resonance. It sounds less muddy. It has a tight sound that works good for leads. In fact, the tone from the basses to the trebles transitions in a consistent manner. I have had my NTX700 for about three weeks now, and I still find myself playing for hours and getting these moments of pure bless. Now, like most classical guitarist, I have acquired an ear for classical guitar tone, much like the way a wine affectionate acquires a taste for fine wine. Some classical guitarist might hate the acoustical tone of the NTX700. You really should play one before you buy. But if this helps, I overheard my 10 year old son saying to my wife "I don't know why Daddy loves his new guitar so much. It sounds just like his old one." So that should tell you, to the untrained ear, it sounds pretty much like a classical.
The NTX700 has excellent pickups. They sound natural and do not have feedback problems. There are two pickups in the NTX700. One for the treble string, and one for the bass strings. These type of pickups have been offered in Yamaha steel string acoustics for a little while now. The NX series has a specially tuned version of the A.R.T (Acoustic Resonance Transducer) pickups optimize for the tone and dynamics of nylon strings. The pickups are coupled with a preamp. The preamp has a three band graphic equalizer, separate gain for the bass and treble pickups, a master volume, and a chromatic tuner. The preamp is reasonably low noise. When recording through the pickups, noise is not a problem. The tuner is great. It works plugged in or unplugged. The tuner has an auto shutoff feature. You can easily read the tuner in the dark. In comparison to my Intellitouch tuner, the tuner on the NTX700 is just as accurate. Specs on the NTX700 say the tuner is accurate to +-3 cents. When you plug in the NTX700, it automatically turns on the preamp and will use power from the 9 volt onboard power supply. The 9 volt battery can be changed without removing the strings. All you do is push a release and a compartment holding the battery pops out. The battery is rated to last about 70 hours. There is a low battery indicator. Also, the NTX700 comes with two accessories. You get a little wrench to adjust the truss rod, and a rubber sound hole cover that can be used for feedback reduction. It is good they provided the sound hole cover because the NTX700 has an elliptical, oversized sound hole. After market covers would not work.
Unfortunately I did not have access to a NTX900FM or NTX1200R to compare. As I mentioned earlier, the difference is in wood choice. If budget is an issue, my guess would be to put your money in your amp. I have a Fishman Loudbox 100. This amp cost more than the guitar,...Read more›

Epiphone Limited Edition Riviera Custom P93 Electric Guitar Wine Red Review

Epiphone Limited Edition Riviera Custom P93 Electric Guitar Wine Red
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Before I purchased this instrument, I read a lot of reviews. Some good, some not so good. Biggest complaint was that the instrument was not assembled well and had lose parts when it arrived. Some other complaints was about the action. Blues requires heavier strings, higher action, and wider frets. This instrument is a SUPER GREAT Blues, Jazz, & Country guitar for the money!
My instrument arrived in great condition, no lose parts (been playing on it for a month now and nothing lose!) It sounds great (I play Blues) and looks terrific.
Unless you want to spend 2 or 3 thousand bucks for a good Blues, Jazz, or Country guitar, you can not go wrong with this fine $500 instrument. Epiphone Limited Edition Riviera Custom P93 Electric Guitar, Wine Red
Hope this helps,
Gunny

Dean Exotica Cocobolo Acoustic Electric Guitar Review

Dean Exotica Cocobolo Acoustic Electric Guitar
Average Reviews:

I bought this guitar today.
This guitar is a thing of beauty, the wood is beautiful and the binding is incredible.
I have not seen craftsmanship like this in a long time.
The guitar has a nice tone and the action is good, right out of the case.
Even without an amp it is loud enough to be heard.
The on board tuner is great and very handy. their symbol lights up both wings when the right pitch for the string is reached.
The on board electronics are very nice and when i plugged it into the amp I must have pushed the volume up, it got my attention in a hurry.
(of course the wife says, Turn that down)
Over all this is one heck of a nice guitar.
If you love exotic wood, this is a great guitar to own.

Squier by Fender Stop Dreaming-Start Playing Set: Affinity Strat HSS w/ G, DEC Jr, Black Review

Squier by Fender Stop Dreaming-Start Playing Set: Affinity Strat HSS w/ G, DEC Jr, Black
Average Reviews:

Ok, lets get this straight, it's a starter guitar, not a $1500 American Deluxe or a $2500 Gibson Les Paul. However if you are just getting started and not sure of your guitar playing commitment, the Fender Squier is an excellent choice. It is well built and as full featured as a starter guitar can be. I purchased the Fender Squier Starter Pack (not Starcaster) about two years ago and have not regretted it. With the GDec Jr amp, this kit is about $350. The less expensive Squier kit with a less capable amp, (which as a beginner may not be that important to you) is $199.
The GDec advantage is its ability to produce more sounds. In either case, it is a good quality guitar. If possible, it is always better if you can listen to a guitar before purchase. The Fender has been a good choice for me.

Traveler Guitar Speedster Electric Travel Guitar, Red, Left-Handed Review

Traveler Guitar Speedster Electric Travel Guitar, Red, Left-Handed
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I did a lot of research for a travel friendly electric guitar and this one came out on top for me. Price wasn't nearly as big a factor for me as small size, good quality, comfortable feel, and a FULL SIZED fret board.
At 28" the Speedster is small enough to use in a tight space and you don't have to get used to a scaled down fret board like some of the competitors like the PalmGuitar and Lapstick, both of which are also much more expensive.
As much as I like the Steinberger as a travel friendly alternative, the Speedster is 2" shorter, and less expensive. One thing that is nice about the cost is you won't feel bad if it gets knocked around in the overhead bin or in the back of your car.
The removable arm looks cool but I don't find it's necessary when using a strap. I leave it at home and use the extra space in the gig bag for my headphone amp, capo, cable, and extra strings.
It should be noted that you won't be able to install a pair of strap locks so I highly recommend a self-locking guitar strap. I really like the Planet Lock Strap made by Planet Waves. For the headphone amp I bought the iGTR and really like it. Great effects, allows for mp3 player and headphone connection, and I can even connect to my iPod speaker for use as an amplifier!

Epiphone SST Studio Solid-Body Acoustic-Electric Guitar, Ebony Review

Epiphone SST Studio Solid-Body Acoustic-Electric Guitar, Ebony
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While there is no way this is going to give you the sound of a good quality dreadnought acoustic that doesn't mean it doesn't sound great. I am blown away by how natural the sound of this guitar is.
This is a much improved version of the old Chet Atkins model. I have both Epiphone models and the SST Studio is head and shoulders above the older model. The new pickups and new preamp make it easy to dial in and get a real acoustic guitar sound.
Now you may ask why purchase this guitar over a regular acoustic like the PR5E which also sound great plugged in. Here are my reasons.
1. No feedback issues. The guitar has no sound hole so you eliminate that issue altogether.
2. small and light. It is much easier to play for an entire gig than my Takamine dreadnought.
3. It sounds better with a band in my opinion. While I would probably not play this for a solo guitar gig I think the brightness of the guitar cuts through much like the sound you hear in Nashville country music. It adds a great acoustic sound to the band.
4. $350 it worth having just for the novelty. We all need another guitar, right?

in the ensemble. Guitar has soft not very loud sound, good tuning along the entire length of the neck. In my opinion, for the price it has finish could be better, but for me it is not very important. What is important - when I ask it for something, guitar responds what I would like to hear.

Dean Michael Batio Guitar, Armored Flame Graphic with Case Review

Dean Michael Batio Guitar, Armored Flame Graphic with Case
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Alder body and neck, ebony fretboard, big square abalone inlays, reasonably light, excellent build, finish is impeccable, not one tiny spot of paint missing or misplaced, which is quite a feat for such a complex paintjob. And what a paintjob ! no one is indifferent to its design and armored flame graphics ! I personally love it, agressive, unusual, and the amount of detail is impressive !
Dean MAB1 comes with Floyd Rose original bridge and tuning locks, in chrome, top quality items, made to endure years of abuse, and with chrome tremolo. Tuners are Grover, also known to be excellent, and this guitar has 3 pick-ups, in HSH (humbucker-single-humbucker) configuration, with 5-position selector for flexibility (Bridge, Bridge+Middle, Middle, Middle+Neck, Neck). The Bridge humbucker is a EMG-81, a classic, active high-gain pick-up widely used for lead sounds in Rock and Metal. The middle single pick-up is a EMG SA, very clean with Strat-like sounds. The neck humbucker is a EMG-85, another classic, very warm sounds, full of middle, great for rhythm guitar playing. If you play Rock, Hard Rock or Metal, this configuration is hard to beat ! Top-quality and great-sounding !
I ordered it from Amazon despite the other review, however fortunately my Dean MAB1 arrived perfectly set-up and playable right out of the box ! Action is reasonably low, and neck finish is smooth, both summing up to high playability.
I have it for a month now, playing every day (not for long periods though since music is not my professional activity, far from it), and it is still in tune !
A few things I don't like : the jack for the 1/4" guitar cable is in a weird position, but fortunately it doesn't really disturbs too much; the pins for the strap are also a bit different from what I am used to, and did not fit very well with my strap, but this is manageable, just got a new strap, as long as the guitar is safe and does not fall ! 8-O
Not a cheap guitar, but a lot of value for the money, with fantastic sound, top-of-the-line components, and great build. Should last a lifetime, and I will review it again here if it doesn't ! ;-)

Sounds great. Feels solid. I am more comfortable with the parlor size. I used to own a Gibson J-45 and never fell in love with it. A family member has an old gibson parlor and I've always liked the body size. I am not a small person, but anyone should try a parlor size first. To me, the sound isn't greatly affected, it seems to have more punch. This is the first time I haven't played a guitar before I bought, but I did read a lot of reviews and I am very impressed and pleased with it.

Blueridge BR-140 Historic Dreadnaught Guitar

This guitar is easy to play and has a quiet fullness that's really nice when you don't want the guitar to step on the vocals. The price is coming down to more like where it belongs. The tuning keys are definitely a step above the ordinary - smooth and solid. One negative which maybe they've fixed (mine's five years old): It came with one undersized wooden shoulder-strap button, like a large string button, that fell out when the glue dried, and the hole is too large to replace it with a regular metal button. I keep meaning to re-glue the wooden button but just keep pushing it back in. What draws me most to this guitar is its soft, balanced sound.
