Recording King 12-String Acoustic Guitar, Solid Top, Mahogany Review

I originally was looking for a decent inexpensive 12 string guitar that I could knock around with and saw the Recording King on Amazon. When I purchased it, it had a rave review about how for the price it had a solid spruce top (one thing that sold me) and decent workmanship. After I got the guitar via Amazon, I tuned it up and started to play. I realzed that the action was too low and the frets were anything but dressed, scraping my hands as I wandered up and down the neck. I took the strings off and decided to place a small shim under the saddle to raise the action a bit so that the strings on and above the 12th fret wouldn't buzz (which didn't do the job, neither did adjusting the truss bar). When I did this the nut came off, it was never glued to the neck! Just this past week I noticed that the bridge was pulling off of the top, even though I kept the strings slack when not in use. I once again checked the review on Amazon and found that a good review turned into a one star review and a cavaet about purchasing this instrument. As a fan of Recording King Guitars on Facebook, I shot them a short note and was told that it looked like I had a warranty issue and that I should contact Customer Service, which I did. They have not yet contacted me back even with the assurance from their Facebook administrator that they would. I also found online another instance of this incompenence where someone shipped the "bad" 12 string to Recording King for warannty work and they sent it back to the owner and told them to send it back to Amazon, which they did and were told that it was over 30 days so they were basically out of luck. DON'T BUY THIS GUITAR. Get an Epiphone, Fender, Ibanez, Ovation or a wind-up plastic toy guitar instead, you will be happier in the long run.

Luna Sol Aquarius Electric Guitar, Ash Review

Luna Sol Aquarius Electric Guitar, Ash
Average Reviews:

I recently purchased one of these guitars and was a little uncertain at first, as I had never heard of Luna Guitars prior to this. This is an amazing guitar. Guitar came perfectly intonated, and sounds amazing. Between the v shaped back of the neck and the 1 5/8 fret width, it is by far the easiest guitar playability wise I have ever played. Everyone comments how beautiful it is, and I agree. Between the designs on the pick guard and truss rod cover, and the abalone inlays of moons in the fret board, this thing is absolutely gorgeous. Sound quality is great, not sure who manufactures the pickups (or if they make the pickups themselves) but they are hot and have great sound and clarity. All around an excellent buy for the money.

Dean Exotica Quilted Maple Acousticic/Electric Cutaway Guitar, Tiger Eye Review

Dean Exotica Quilted Maple Acousticic/Electric Cutaway Guitar, Tiger Eye
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bought this guitar in May 2010. I'm a beginner-intermediate guitar player.

Pros:
1. Great looks with high quality finishes. The quilted maple really adds appeal here. The iridescent pearl inlays around the body top edge, rosette and fretboard just makes it the more impressive.
2. Sounds good. Has good bright tone expected from a maple top & bodied guitar with decent loudness.
3. Quality seems top notch: the tuners, frets, overall craftmanship, no loose parts, no fret buzzez.
4. Action is just right with an adjustable neck
5. Good electronic pickup. For 2010 Dean has the I2NR pickup instead (no aphex exciter tho). I've played live plugged in at church service several times and I'm very satisfied with the sound the pickup gives. The 4 band EQ gives plenty of flexibility. No feedback issues, no hissing. The tuner works well but is not chromatic so won't help in case you want to detune say the low E to a D.
Cons:
1. For 2010 it seems the top's sunburst effect look is much more pronounced. I'd prefer the looks of the 2009 shown. The sunburst effect starts from 100% black to the orange-brown color seen in the picture.
2. Sound is brighter and more metallic than I'd like and not as loud as other dreadnought/jumbo guitars. I have some Elixir Polywebs to mellow it down to taste: Elixir Strings Acoustic Guitar Strings, 6 String, Light POLYWEB Coating
3. Construction seems to be of maple veneer/ply wood instead of solid maple. Well .. you get what you pay for.
4. No pick guard around sound hole. Added a transparent one that I found online.
Overall seems to be a bright sounding guitar with good electronics and awesome looks worth twice its price.

Traveler Guitar Escape EG2 WHT HSC-TWD Electric Guitar, White with Tortoise Shell Pick Guard and Tweed Case Review

Traveler Guitar Escape EG2 WHT HSC-TWD Electric Guitar, White with Tortoise Shell Pick Guard and Tweed Case

This guitar sure is a beauty and the size is just right. It gives you the "feel" you would want from a normal sized guitar. The intonation on these are also superb. The action however is where this guitar runs into trouble. I have gone through 4 returns trying to get the right one. The first guitar I received had substantial fret buzz on the 6th string even though the strings were still quite high for an electric guitar. The buzz was substantial enough that a couple of the frets would not even play a note. Since this isn't a cheap guitar I didn't spend much time adjusting it. I figured I'd return it and try again. The second one I received had a little fret buzz but it was acceptable. Unfortunately it was obviously used and had dirt and black smudges all over it. Again, I didn't pay this kind of money for a used guitar so I returned it. The 3rd one I received actually had headphones in the case where the first 2 did not. I'm guessing that this is supposed to come with headphones and they are being lifted from some of the cases prior to shipping. This guitar had no buzzing on any of the frets and though it appeared to have been handled, was playing well. I then turned the guitar over and noticed that even though this had the body of the EG-2, the neck and bolted plate on the back had a serial number for the older Traveler EG-1. The guitar had clearly been tampered with and had mixed matched parts on it. I am currently awaiting guitar number 4 hoping that everything is finally new, untouched, not tampered with, playable, and that there are no missing items.
Even though I think this guitar is overpriced by about one hundred seventy bucks, I still really want to love the guitar. It looks great, feels right, plays decent and will be a great practice tool for when I have some down time, on vacation, or just watching tv.
The deal with the case is good since the case alone sells for one hundred dollars, but be warned. I'm suspect to believe that when you buy this bundle, the guitar gets handled a lot more and you may be getting a referb or second hand item from the manufacture. You might be better off buying just the guitar with its carrying bag. This has been an annoyance but amazon has great customer service and have been over nighting the guitars to me. Even with all the problems, I can't help but smile when I'm playing the guitar. Very cool concept.

Washburn Southwestern Series Acoustic Electric Guitar Review

Washburn Southwestern Series Acoustic Electric Guitar

This is an amazing guitar for this price range. It has a wonderful, deep, rich sound that is especially good for fingerpicking but also sounds great when strummed. Grover tuners keep it right on the money. It has a 1.73 inch nut so the action is fast and smooth. PLUS it looks amazing. Quilted ash on the back and sides in addition to the butterfly, rosewood bridge and hopi fret markers etc. A great guitar at a great price with a sound that competes with guitars at much higher prices.

Seagull Coastline S6 Burst GT Guitar Review

Seagull Coastline S6 Burst GT Guitar
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this guitar as my beginner instrument to start getting into acoustic guitars and I think it turned out to be a really great choice. I was going to get a Seagull Original S6, but then I found one of these for basically the same price.
Just to get it out of the way, wow this guitar looks fantastic! But how does it sound you say? Well, since I'm just starting out, I don't have a developed ear, but from what I can tell it's very warm, bright and layered. I noticed it sounds a tad muffled when I finger pick, but that just may be how it usually is since I'm new to guitar. Also, the guitar had a few oddities sound-wise when I first started playing, but now those have gone away. It was probably just the change in temperature and humidity since it was cold outside when they delivered it.
The action seems really perfect; the strings are low enough to the frets to play, but they don't buzz. The solid top gives the guitar a fantastic ring and I was surprised how long I could hear a note after strumming. It's got a glossy finish which looks pretty, but is prone to getting fingerprints if you care about that kind of thing. I've read that this kind of finish will show scratch marks more easily than a semi-gloss or flat finish so be aware.
Anyway, I'm 100% satisfied with this guitar and would definitely recommend this to others looking for a good band-for-the-buck guitar.

AXL Western Badwater Eldorado Electric Guitar, Antique Brown Review

AXL Western Badwater Eldorado Electric Guitar, Antique Brown

The first time I saw this guitar, I knew I HAD to have it. So I ordered one and waited, waited, waited. Not that it took that long, I was just anxious, lol. Finally it arrived and I was so excited! I unpacked it, plugged it in and tried to tune it. Dismay! This was really upsetting, the action was so bad, it was ridiculous. The guitar sounded terrible. Finally, I sighted down the neck and saw a pretty bad bow in the neck. For a few minutes, I was miserable about the whole thing and wanted to ship it back. But then, I have some experience with guitars and know how to use my hands, so I tightened the truss rod and straightened the neck - which improved the action dramatically, of course, but it still sounded like a bucket of wrenches rattling around inside a garbage can. I checked the intonation and every string was off pretty severely. Ok, I happen to know how to fix that, so I did - took a good half hour, but I got it intonated properly, and suddenly, it sounded just great! But... the tone knob was scratchy and the volume knob had a big dead spot in it. I didn't want to mess with replacing the knobs so I called a "Johnson" dealer that I found locally through the AXL website. They refused to help me. So I paid another guy at a closer shop to fix it, and all he had to do was use some electrical spray to 'clean' the pots. NOW, the guitar plays, sounds and operates the way it should. I can't say whether the manufacturer was responsible for the condition of the guitar, the dealer I bought it through, or the shipper (who might have left it in the sun for hours or something). I can only hope that no one else has to go through all that. I will watch the reviews to see if others have the same issues. The guitar is great now.
