If you're looking for that elusive guitar, a tone machine with great playability, solid appointments, and blazing tone at less than a thousand bucks, look no further than the c 1 ATX Blackjack from Schecter.
This axe has a 25.5" scale, a set mahogany neck for great sustain and tone transfer, an ebony fingerboard (which feels better to me than rosewood or maple), an arch-top mahogany body (available in either aged white or black finish), Grover tuners, a string-through body design for those of us who don't care for Floyd Rose locking trem systems (which are an absolute pain when it comes to changing strings), a graph-tusk nut so your strings don't get snagged at the nut, and to top it all off, the stock pick-ups are a pair of Seymour Duncan Blackouts, which are active pickups meant to blaze everything in their path.
I've had other guitars with EMG active pickups, and these SD Blackouts offer more tone and response, especially if you play metal ormusic that requires a large dose of distortion. But to my surprise, this guitar sounded great in both the neck and bridge position through my amp's clean channel. I play through a Peavey Classic 50 212, and I was able to achieve a warm, bluesy tone while playing in the neck position using a clean channel. It sounded bright, full, and very clear, which adds to the stunning versatility of this guitar.
Once you satiate your want for something clean and need to drop something heavy, switch to your amp's lead channel and see what this bad boy can do. Searing sustains, cutting leds, and a tone that would make Randy Rhoads proud. And if you REALLY want to drop something heavy, play this through a Boss Metalcore pedal through your amps clean channel. You'll be able to pinch and squeal all the harmonics you want. Down-tune your guitar to drop-C tuning and it'll only get better. As a sidenote, you may also want to invest in a noise suppression pedal )i.e., Boss NS2, ISP Technologies Noise Decimator) because there's just too much power coming out of the Blackouts, resulting in some unwanted feedback. Totally controllable, though, and that shouldn't dissuade you from purchasing this amazing guitar.
No guitar manufacturing company combines quality and value like Schecter, and they've proven it again with the release of the c 1 atx blackjack. I traded my American Fender Strat for this guitar and am very, very glad I did. And if you're hoping to score another guitar with similar appointments at a comparable price, lots of luck to you. The chances of that happening are either slim or none. Ibanez or ESP may put out something comparable, but I haven't seen anything decent from either company going for less than a grand.
Schecter all the way!
