(More customer reviews)The first thing is, this is a great combo for ANY style of music. Like any great piece of equipment, you have to put in some time to make it work for you. I have mainly been trying different tubes to coax out more clean tones as I use my pedals for overdrive. I found the original tubes far too touchy & ready to distort. When my luthier, Bill Covert at Lyrical Lumberin Maitland Florida, was helping me swap tubes, we managed to get the distortion to move from around 10 o'clock on the gain knob to almost 2 or 3, depending on the level. This also brought out a lot more varied tones from this amp which we both were very pleased with. Secondly, we tried various pre-amp tubes & in different combinations, swapped positions & almost every time there was a definite change in how the amp responded. For instance, we tried Tung-sol 12ax7's which we both agreed were far too ready to break-up & the distortion was very strident. We eventually moved to 5163's which were great. This is an amazing amp from a great maker, the only one my luthier recommended to me. He was right as usual, which can be a little bothersome, but then that's why I only go to him for advice on my equipment. Third, the controls are simple, which I like because as I said, I also use pedals so a lot of my tone shaping is done before the amp, so this works out really well for me. I couldn't be happier.
