(More customer reviews)I ordered this guitar from Amazon after checking out a bunch of reviews online (written and video) and they all say good things about it and the guitar sounds great in the videos. Also, considering this is made by Dean Zelinsky (Founder of the awesome Dean Guitars) I figured I would give it a try.
First things first. This guitar plays better than any other I have ever played. The neck is something I wish I could put on every guitar that I own. It is shaped perfectly for, well, anything. I never felt like I was fighting the guitar regardless of what I was playing or at what speeds. The finish is beautiful, the woods are the sort that goes into great guitars, coil tap on the pickups if you want singles, good tuners, and the whole body is just a little over an inch thick with loads of natural sustain.
However, all those things are for naught since the guitar sounds like a piece of driftwood with strings attached :( Now, I know what you are thinking. Probably the amp setup. I don't think so. I am playing through a Vox Night Train (all tube) amp and Cab with Celestion Greenbacks. Also, my primary overdrive is a Red Witch Famulus (truly great boutique pedal). Sadly the fact of the matter is that my two most affordable guitars, an Ibanez TR and Schecter Diamond (both of which cost significantly less than this) sound brighter and more well defined than the Imperial.
I really wanted this guitar to be great. I tried putting new strings on (Dean Markley Blue Steels), checked the forums for advice (but only got agreement that it sounds mushy). Perhaps EMGs can help it, I don't know, but I wasn't going to put all that money and effort into finding out.
Perhaps I would recommend this as a rhythm guitar for a group who want a flat sound... if such a thing exists.
I returned it and got a (slightly more expensive) Fender Spalted Maple Custom HH Telecaster instead (which sounds amazing).
