My main amp was a Vox AC50CPH and I never was thrilled with the way it handled low tones. I'd seen the smaller models of the Night Train and fell in love with the retro chrome look, but the low power output didn't fit my needs. However, when I saw the 50 watt version, I had to try it. I've never been happier with a blind purchase before. The only time I'd heard the amp was on YouTube which didn't do it justice. The "Girth" channel is capable of reproducing classic rock tones reminiscent of Marshall meets boutique. The low end definition is huge. The clean channel is incredible too with great Vox chime. The size/weight are convenient, but the looks and sound are priceless. The head measures under 20" wide and my band mates referred to it as the "lunch box" until I fired it up and the laughing stopped. However, opposed to the old saying, with this silver cloud, there is a dark gray lining: the "Thick" option on the clean side. This is the most godawful sound Vox ever conceived. I'm not sure what was going through the minds of the tech designers when they decided to bypass the EQ for a gain boost. The sound is thin and abrasive - imagine a wah pedal left on with the treble pushed all the way up and coming out of a speaker made out of a paper towel tube. If I were rating on this useless feature alone, it would get a negative 5. However, the Girth channel more than makes up for it with lots of variations and excellent tones. At this price, you can't go wrong.
